El amor en tiempos de Cólera Review ESP/ENG

Today I come here with the intention of reviewing a novel that is already many years old since its publication, but I could only read it recently in digital format, it is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. A story that, among other things, teaches us that perseverance is the only way to achieve what you most desire.
Hoy vengo por aquí con la intención de reseñar una novela que tiene ya muchísimos años desde su publicación, pero yo solo pude leerla recientemente en formato digital, se trata de El amor en tiempos de Cólera de Gabriel García Márquez. Una historia que, entre otras cosas, nos enseña que la perseverancia, a es el único método para alcanzar lo que más deseas.
Sinopsis
Florentino Ariza, the humble telegrapher of the town was deeply in love with Fermina, a fine lady of high society, and through courtship and love phrases written in letters, he manages to conquer her heart, however the young woman's father disapproves of the relationship, belittles Florentino, so he arbitrarily decides that she must leave the city and marry a prestigious doctor who is also older than her, and although Florentino is not willing to resign himself, Fermina accepts her father's decision. The years go by, she resigns herself to her married life and although Florentino decides to move on with his life, he never loses hope of having Fermina, until after 50 years, heaven seems to have heard his prayers.
Florentino Ariza, el humilde telegrafista del pueblo estaba profundamente enamorado de Fermina, una fina señorita de la alta sociedad, y por medio de galanteos y frases de amor escritas en cartas, él logra conquistar su corazón, no obstante el padre de la joven desaprueba la relación, menosprecia a Florentino, así que decide arbitrariamente que ella debe abandonar la ciudad y casarse con un prestigioso médico que además es mayor que ella, y a pesar de que Florentino no está dispuesto a resignarse, Fermina acepta la decisión de su padre. Los años van pasando, ella se resigna a su vida de casada y aunque Florentino decide seguir adelante con su vida nunca pierde la esperanza de tener a Fermina, hasta que luego de 50 años el cielo parece haber escuchado sus plegarias.
Personal Opinion
One of the things that have always caught my attention in García Márquez's books is that he usually incorporated his own experiences or those of his relatives and acquaintances in the plot, so in Love in the Time of Cholera, what we are really seeing is part of what was the story between the author's parents, only that in his case they did not have to wait too long to be together. What happens is that in the plot Fermina was such a stubbornly faithful woman, in the beginning she was too faithful to the traditions, to her father and even to the prejudices of her family, for her it was impossible to disobey, to go against the precepts, and later I think it was more respect than love that prevented her from cheating on her husband, but on the other hand she did not consider Florentino as a man worthy of conquering her, she was in my opinion, quite conceited, however he was always clear about his goal and never gave up.
Una de las cosas que siempre han llamado mi atención de los libros de García Márquez es que usualmente él incorporaba sus propias vivencias o las de sus familiares y conocidos en la trama, de esta manera en El Amor en Tiempos de Cólera, lo que realmente estamos viendo es parte de lo que fue la historia entre los padres del autor, solo que en su caso ellos no tuvieron que esperar demasiado tiempo para estar juntos. Lo que sucede es que en la trama Fermina era una mujer tan obstinada fiel, en un inicio era demasiado fiel a las tradiciones, a su padre e incluso a los prejuicios de su familia, para ella era imposible desobedecer, ir en contra de los preceptos, y posteriormente creo que fue más el respeto que el amor lo que impidió que ella engañara a su marido, pero por otra parte ella no consideraba a Florentino como un hombre digno de conquistarla, era en mi opinión, bastante engreída, sin embargo él siempre tuvo claro su objetivo y nunca desistió.
In this work, unlike most of García Márquez's works, there is no magical realism, which is a hallmark of the famous author, but I think that perhaps he wanted to show love and the reality of Latin American society at the beginning of the last century in its purest essence, without euphemisms or any other element that distorts reality, in fact in this play we go from seeing a chaste Florentino Ariza who is rejected by Fermina, to a conqueror of teenage girls, which evidently is something that we would not socially approve of today, but that was part of our past and unfortunately was seen as something completely normal. And at the same time we understand that, although it is a novel that talks about love and how it manages to overcome the test of time, this is not idyllic, it is not that picture we had in our heads about Victorian couples strolling on a lake, but it is a feeling that faces obstacles and sometimes it is difficult to keep it alive, precisely because of difficult circumstances.
En esta obra, a diferencia de la mayoría de las de García Márquez, no hay realismo mágico, lo cual es un sello característico del afamado autor, pero pienso que tal vez quiso mostrar el amor y la realidad de la sociedad latinoamericana de principios del siglo pasado en su más pura esencia, sin eufemismos ni cualquier otro elemento que distorsione la realidad, de hecho en esta obra pasamos de ver a un casto Florentino Ariza que es rechazado por Fermina, a un conquistador de chicas adolescentes, lo cuál evidentemente es algo que no aprobaríamos socialmente el día de hoy, pero que formó parte de nuestro pasado y lamentablemente fue visto como algo completamente normal. Y al mismo tiempo entendemos que, si bien es una novela que habla sobre el amor y como este logra superar la prueba del tiempo, este no es idílico, no es esa estampa que teníamos en la cabeza sobre parejas victorianas paseando en un lago, sino que se trata de un sentimiento que se enfrenta a obstáculos y a veces es difícil mantenerlo vivo, precisamente por circunstancias difíciles.
Both characters are far from perfect, in fact they are full of flaws, but I believe that through them García Márquez wanted to convey a powerful message, and that is that it is never too late to achieve what you so desire and have fought for, the time elapsed and the obstacles overcome are proof of your own strength.
Ambos personajes están lejos de ser perfectos, de hecho están llenos de defectos, pero creo que a través de ellos García Márquez quiso transmitir un poderoso mensaje, y es que nunca es demasiado tarde para lograr aquello que tanto deseas y por lo que has luchado, el tiempo trascurrido y los obstáculos sorteados son la prueba de tu propia fortaleza.
For now, I have nothing more to add, but I'd like to encourage you to read the work if you haven't already. There's also an English-language film version, but I honestly recommend reading the book, as it obviously contains much more material and better captures the Latin American essence of the characters and the plot. Por ahora no me queda nada más que añadir pero me gustaría invitarlos a leer la obra en caso de que no lo hayan hecho aún, también existen una versión cinematográfica, anglosajona, pero honestamente les recomiendo que lean el libro ya que obviamente contiene mucho más material y obviamente captura mejor la esencia latinoamericana de los personajes y la trama. Es una novela digna de recomendar, yo también prefiero mil veces el libro, pero a pesar de lo frustrante que podía resultar la actitud de Fermina a lo largo de la novela, creo que esta es una historia sobre perseverancia y nunca perder la fe y la esperanza. Maravillosa Review.
