It is sad to see how generation after generation it seems that people are losing more interest in reading, I say this because in family gatherings I have talked to many people and when I try to guide the conversation towards the topic of books, many have no idea what I am talking about, in fact they claim that reading makes them lazy, causes them boredom or confusion, but when I ask them what books they have read the answers are almost always the same “One Hundred Years of Solitude” “The Iliad” “The Tunnel” or “Don Quijte de la Mancha” ie, novels that they read sometime by imposition when they were in high school, novels that usually have a deep content that without supervision, or better said, motivation, could be exhausting or overwhelming, this led me to think about my own experience as a parent and as a reader, reaching a certain conclusion, we must promote the habit of reading from a very early age.
Es triste ver como generación tras generación parece que las personas van perdiendo más interés en la lectura, lo digo porque en reuniones familiares he conversado con muchas personas y cuando intento guiar la conversación hacia el tema de los libros, muchos no tienen idea de lo que les hablo, de hecho afirman que leer les da pereza, les causa aburrimiento o confusión, pero cuando les pregunto que libros han leído las respuestas casi siempre son las mismas "Cien Años de Soledad" "La Iliada" "El Túnel" o "Don Quijte de la Mancha" es decir, novelas que leyeron alguna vez por imposición cuando estaban en la secundaria, novelas que por lo general tienen un contenido profundo que sin supervisión, o mejor dicho, motivación, podrían resultar extenuantes o abrumadoras, esto me llevó a pensar en mi propia experiencia como padre y como lector, llegando a una conclusión certera, hay que promover el hábito de la lectura desde una edad muy temprana.
My daughters have been grown up for a long time, in fact the oldest is already 40 years old, but I think it was thanks to the fact that I constantly tried to cultivate in them the habit of reading, that they both love to read and have even written their own novels, and the oldest managed to publish her first work.
Hace mucho que mis hijas crecieron, de hecho la mayor ya tiene 40 años pero creo que fue gracias a que yo constantemente intenté cultivar en ellas el habito de la lectura, que ambas aman leer e incluso ambas han escrito sus propias novelas, y la mayor logró publicar su primera obra.

Children are very graphic, they are drawn to colors or pictures that somehow give them a little more visual context to whatever they are reading. When my daughters were very young and couldn't read yet, my wife or I would read to them how many with lots of pictures, this in a way not only helps the children connect more with the story they are hearing, but it helps stimulate the imagination.

Para forjar un buen hábito es indispensable la constancia, esto no solo reforzará el valor de la disciplina, sino que ayudará al niño a crear un vínculo con sus libros, a estimular su interés por conocer cada día historias nuevas, pero eso sí, si bien al inicio debemos ser nosotros quienes guiemos lo que nuestros hijos pueden empezar a leer, debemos darles más libertad conformen avancen y empezar a preguntarles qué quieren leer, recordemos que cada personalidad es diferente y de esta manera también lo son los gustos, algunos querrán historias sobre fantasías, otro sobre aventuras, otros se sentirán más atraídos por las fábulas, en fin. Y en caso de que ese día no tengas tiempo para dedicarlo a la lectura, pídele que lo haga solo.

Cuando leemos para niños muy pequeños necesitamos capturar su atención para sumergirlos por completo en la historia ¿y cómo podemos lograrlo? interpretando cada personaje que nos encontramos a través de la lectura, mediante la imitación de voces, por ejemplo, si estamos leyendo la historia de los Siete Cabritos, la voz de la madre no puede sonar igual a la del lobo o la de los niños, cada voz debe sonar diferente, esto puede resultar en una experiencia muy divertida y estimulante para los niños, lo cuál hará que deseen que llegue rápidamente la hora de lectura, incluso creo que podríamos pedirle que nos diga cómo cree que hablaría determinado personaje.

I think this exercise will help him to stimulate his concentration. You can also ask him to let you know if he doesn't understand a word and together you can look it up in the dictionary to find out what it means.
Para estimular la comprensión lectora podemos pedirles a los niños que nos hagan un resumen de lo leído en el cual nos expresen cual fue su personaje favorito, porque cree que hizo lo que hizo, si considera que estuvo bien o mal, o como habría reaccionado él si hubiese estado allí, o si lo prefieres puedes hacer preguntas más directas como hacia dónde iba determinado personaje, a quien consiguió en su camino y qué le preguntó, cosas así. Considero que este ejercicio lo ayudará a estimular su concentración. También puedes decirle que te avise si no comprende alguna palabra y juntos podrían buscarla en el diccionario para descubrir su significado.

La lectura debe ser una experiencia placentera para los niños, no una tortura o una imposición, pero en esto juega un papel muy importante el entorno, así que yo considero que es de vital importancia elegir el lugar más apartado y tranquilo de la casa, al cual puedas incluso decorar involucrando al niño en la actividad, usando colores, recortes de periódico, estantes con libros, en fin, la creatividad queda a criterio de cada quien, el caso es elegir y acondicionar un espacio que sea cómodo, agradable y de preferencia silencioso para que a los niños les resulte fácil concentrarse en la lectura sin estímulos externos que puedan distraerlos.

While I believe that there is and never will be a better experience than holding a book in your hands, turning the pages and smelling its aroma, today we must accept that technology offers us different options and that not everyone wants or can use the conventional method of picking up a physical book and reading it, There are those who prefer to be read to even though they can do it by themselves, but there are also blind people for whom it is impossible to have access to reading unless it is in Braille format, so in these cases they can opt for audio books that are a different experience, which can also allow you to perform other activities while you receive the information. On the other hand, if they do not want to take up too much space with books or take them anywhere on any occasion but there is not too much space in the suitcases, they could opt for E-books or digital books.
Si bien considero que no hay y nunca habrá una mejor experiencia que sostener un libro entre tus manos, pasar las páginas y sentir su aroma, hoy en día debemos aceptar que la tecnología nos ofrece diferentes opciones y que no todo el mundo quiere o puede usar el método convencional de tomar un libro físico y leerlo, hay quienes prefieren que les lean a pesar de que ya pueden hacerlo por sí mismos, pero también están las personas invidentes para los cuales es imposible tener acceso a la lectura a menos que sea en formato braille, así que en estos casos ellos pueden optar por audiolibros que son una experiencia diferente, que además te puede permitir realizar otras actividades mientras recibes la información. Por otra parte si no desean ocupar demasiado espacio con los libros o llevarlos a cualquier parte en cualquier ocasión pero no hay demasiado espacio en las maletas, podrían optar por los E-books o libros digitales.
Anyway, these are some of the methods that I consider that can be carried out to encourage the habit of reading in children, however I believe that everyone can omit or add methods according to the needs of their own children, but I am sure that if we pay more attention to this later we could have more disciplined, creative and cultured children, youth and adults. I agree that technology has put out a challenge for physical books. Why would a kid be drawn to books if they can watch animation all the time?
I am not going to answer the question here. But, I think every parent who wants their children to read, should have a convincing answer.
