[Book Review] La Casa de los Espíritus ESP/ENG

This book has been around for quite some time since its publication, but I must confess that I have just read it for the first time and I have found many interesting facts worth mentioning in this review. I read it after hearing my niece recommend it to my daughter, so I borrowed it from her and immersed myself in the reading that transported me to a troubled time in the 20th century.
Este libro tiene ya bastante tiempo desde su publicación, pero debo confesar que yo acabo de leerlo por primera vez y vaya que me he encontrado muchos datos interesantes dignos de mencionar en esta reseña. Lo leí después de escuchar que mi sobrina se lo recomendaba a mi hija, así que se lo pedí prestado y me sumergí en la lectura que me trasladó a una conflictiva época en el siglo XX.
Nívea and Severo Del Valle are a happy and stable married couple, with a solid economy, influences, good social position and three wonderful daughters: Rosa, Clara and Blanca. Esteban Trueba is a poor but enterprising young man, who is determined to take an old family farm from the ruins in order to be worthy of the respect and admiration of other people, and also wishes to marry the eldest daughter of the Del Valle family, Rosa, a girl of extraordinary beauty, enigmatic as a nymph, but the girl dies after drinking by mistake a wine adulterated with poison that was intended for her father, so eventually he ends up falling in love and marrying Clara, the youngest daughter, which has certain psychic or paranormal powers. Esteban is a rough and arbitrary character, which brings him many problems with Clara, but especially with his granddaughter Blanca, who ends up falling in love with a young peasant and social fighter, Pedro Tercero, but everyone's life will be shaken with a 180 degree turn when major political and social changes show them that money is not everything in life and that influences can come from who you least imagine.
Nívea y Severo Del Valle son un matrimonio feliz y estable, con una sólida economía, influencias, buena posición social y tres maravillosas hijas: Rosa, Clara y Blanca. Esteban Trueba es un joven pobre pero emprendedor, que está determinado a sacar adelante y de entre las ruinas una vieja finca familiar para poder ser merecedor del respeto y admiración de las demás personas, además también desea casarse con la hija mayor de la familia Del Valle, Rosa, una muchacha de extraordinaria belleza, enigmática como una ninfa, pero la chica muere luego de beber por error un vino adulterado con veneno que estaba destinado a su padre, así que con el tiempo él termina enamorándose y casándose con Clara, la hija menor, la cuál tiene ciertos poderes psíquicos o paranormales. Esteban es de carácter tosco y arbitrario, lo cuál le trae muchos problemas con Clara, pero sobre todo con su nieta Blanca, quien termina enamorada de un joven campesino y luchador social, Pedro Tercero, pero la vida de todos se verá estremecida con un giro de 180 grados cuando grandes cambios políticos y sociales les demuestran que el dinero no lo es todo en la vida y que las influencias pueden venir de quien menos lo imaginas.
This novel explores so many different themes that it is difficult for me to start with this review, on the one hand it tells us about the family, violence and the imposition of ideas, we see how a family that begins as solid crumbles before the dictatorial character of the patriarch of the family, someone who is used to power and others obey, and ironically ends up subjugated to a much greater power and that he himself, along with other elitist and powerful members of society helped to impose, as a terrible but valuable lesson. This brings us to another important point that the book touches on: the conflict and dictatorship that Chile lived through for many years at the hands of Augusto Pinochet, this forced many people to leave the country by alternative means, others took refuge in the mountains where they organized themselves planning strategies to try to free the country from the yoke, others fell under the clutches of the regime and suffered the most unspeakable tortures, And it is precisely here where Esteban Trueba receives a painful but valuable lesson, because all his power and money were of no help to recover his granddaughter who had been kidnapped by the regime, however the help came from a person he never imagined could repay him for a favor he had done him years before.
Esta novela explora tantos temas diversos que es difícil para mi iniciar con esta review, por una parte nos habla de la familia, la violencia y la imposición de ideas, vemos como una familia que comienza como sólida se desmorona ante el carácter dictatorial del patriarca de la familia, alguien que está acostumbrado al poder y a que los demás obedezcan, y que irónicamente termina subyugado ante un poder mucho mayor y que él mismo, junto con otros miembros elitistas y poderosos de la sociedad ayudaron a imponer, como una terrible pero valiosa lección. Esto nos lleva a otro punto importante que toca la obra: el conflicto y la dictadura que vivió Chile durante muchos años a manos de Augusto Pinochet, esto obligó a muchas personas a salir del país por medios alternos, otros se refugiaron en las montañas donde se organizaron planeando estrategias para intentar liberar al país del yugo, otros cayeron bajo las garras del régimen y sufrieron las más indecibles torturas, y es precisamente aquí donde Esteban Trueba recibe una dolorosa pero valiosa lección, pues todo su poder y dinero no servían de ayuda para recuperar a su nieta que había sido secuestrada por el régimen, sin embargo la ayuda vino de una persona que él nunca imaginó que podría retribuirle un favor que él le hizo años atrás.
But fortunately, the novel takes on an increasingly hopeful tone as it approaches the end, which helps to relieve some of the oppression that invades you as a reader when witnessing so many injustices. Thankfully, it concludes with a reconciliation between the grandfather and his granddaughter, as well as hope for a better future, despite the challenges and difficulties experienced throughout the book.
Pero afortunadamente la novela va tomando un enfoque cada vez más esperanzador conforme se acerca el final, lo cual hace que te quites parte de esa opresión que te invade como lector al ser testigo de tantas injusticias, y gracias a Dios concluye con la reconciliación entre el abuelo y la nieta, además de la esperanza de un futuro mejor, a pesar de los desafíos y las dificultades vividas durante todo el libro.
The author's narrative style is very engaging and interesting because it blends elements of magical realism, such as Rosa's green hair or Clara's extrasensory perception, with the political and social situation in Chile, giving the story a touch of depth and mystery. In fact, Clara is a kind of connection between the spiritual and ethereal world and the earthly world. She represents the world's hope, love, and mercy, but at the same time, she is a grounding wire that keeps Blanca focused on the importance of living and fighting.
El estilo de narración de su autora es muy envolvente e interesante porque mezcla elementos del realismo mágico como el cabello verde de Rosa o la percepción extrasensorial de Clara, por ejemplo, con la situación política y social de Chile lo que le da un toque de profundidad y enigma a la historia. De hecho Clara es una especie de conexión entre el mundo espiritual y etéreo con el mundo terrenal, ella representa la esperanza del mundo, es el amor y la piedad, pero al mismo tiempo es un cable a tierra que mantiene a Blanca enfocada en la importancia de vivir y luchar.
Thank you so much for reading my post. I recommend this book because it's honestly worth reading. However, it's one of those books I've only been able to read once in my life because I can't bear to get to the scene of the torture that follows the imposition of the Pinochet regime. Muchas gracias por haber leído mi post, les recomiendo este libro porque honestamente vale la pena leerlo, sin embargo es de esos que solo he podido leer una sola vez en la vida porque no soporto llegar a la escena de las torturas que surgen tras la imposición del régimen de Pinochet, es repugnante e indignante, por eso me alegra tanto que haya tenido un final muy alentador para los personajes.
