Scrap, Merge, Upgrade: Fixing the Flaws in Our School Courses

The importance of education is enormous and vital in our world in raising intellectually sound individuals who can tackle real-life challenges and create solutions to some problems that have been recurring. But then, despite how great the school system is, a lot of people have come out openly to say that some of the courses students are made to study are irrelevant or outdated and that such courses should either be scrapped or merge with other relevant ones. Is that truly the case? And what can be done to make school more focused on introducing relevant courses, and what's my take on the entire subject matter? Below you'll find answers to all these questions.

Education and the school system have been an amazing part of our society, and regardless of what I say in this article, it won't take away the flowers the school deserves. Besides, it's worth noting that I'm an educator myself, but then, the truth is when you take a critical look at our school courses right from preschool till the higher institutions, you'll notice that there are lots of courses that seem irrelevant or obsolete, and that's why we ended up seeing graduates on the street who can't secure a job because the course they studied in school can't secure them a beneficial job.

Take for instance in school, we've subjects that seem obsolete or irrelevant being taught separately, subjects in areas of general studies, where we've social studies, civil education, and security being taught separately. All of these are more or less the same thing and can be merged instead of using them to bombard the students with lots to read and the parents responsibility to buy more notes and textbooks for their ward.

Also, business studies is a subject I think is obsolete or needs an upgrade, and for that to happen and make it more relevant, if core values such as financial literacy, digital marketing, and entrepreneurship can be embedded in it, it'll go a long way in not only equipping students with valuable knowledge but also preparing them for real-life solutions to challenges.

In university some courses were being taught, some even made compulsory, and you'd be wondering what their usefulness is, for instance, philosophy or education, use of the library, and the like. So if these courses are just irrelevant to today's world and yet we're being taught and made to do them compulsorily, then that's why I'm suggesting they're either outrightly removed or merged with other up-to-date lessons. For instance, instead of use of the library, we can have courses like digital information literacy, academic research skills, and the like.

That's just my take; most of the school curriculum needs to be looked into and edited to suit our present world demand and pace in this digital age.

In my opinion, school is supposed to teach us values, lessons, and courses that'll be good and instrumental in real life and not just teach for teaching's sake without any relevance thereafter.

Ha! They now teach Civic and social studies separately?? But these are two similar subjects now. In my time I learned civic education inside social studies and not separately. No wonder we find the course work of students and their textbooks increasing. As for the Business Admin, if it gets scraped how do people study the theory of business environment and business law?

Sha I am in your dm, go and answer me 🤲

Now they're taught separately and it's just ridiculous..

I didn't say business studies or admin should be scrapped, I only said it should be infused with topics such as digital marketing, financial literacy and the likes.

Sometimes I just wonder why certain courses are made compulsory when they are not even related to the program the person is studying.
Just as you said, I wish they would just include financial literacy (especially) because it’s what we really need in this era.

That's unfortunate reality of institution courses and hopefully there'll be changes implemented soon.
