Strategies to overcome low self esteem
Low self-esteem makes life feel difficult. You doubt yourself, feel unworthy, and believe others are better than you. Here are some strategies to overcome low self esteem:
- Accept yourself for who you are
While growing up I was always made gest of, either my accent or when playing games with others. The seniors ones among us always found a reason to make gest of me simply because I came from the village and couldn't speak English properly, each time they do this I was always sad and with time I started keeping to myself and just looking at others thinking they are better than me that I'm nothing.
But as time went by, I started accepting myself for who I am.
- speak kindly to yourself:
If you're the type that always tell yourself, 'I'm not good enough you'll believe it'. But when you speak positively to yourself, you'll be surprised at how far you will come.
Imagine a child who is always being told you're useless, that child will grow up with that mindset but when he or she hears encouraging words like 'you're strong, you can do it'. It will build their self confidence and help them to over come self esteem little by little.
- Another strategy that can help is to surround yourself with positive people : when I was in the university I had these two friends who were always supportive, they made feel I could do and be anything without minding what people say.
If someone always makes you feel worthless, it’s okay to walk away. Choose friends who uplift you.
- Do what makes you feel happy:
Low self esteem makes one feel unworthy but once you do something you love, you'll be okay. Whether it's reading, drawing, cooking, or singing, find something that brings you joy. When you engage in what you love, you remind yourself that you are talented and valuable.
Overcoming low self-esteem takes time. But every small step you take makes a difference. You are worthy. You are enough. Believe in yourself.
There are several other ways and things we can do to overcome low self-esteem, such as practicing mindfulness, prioritizing self-care, facing one's fear, and seeking professional help, and all put together can help us in our journey towards the bigger picture, but then we must understand that it takes time to overcome low self-esteem; we should learn to be patient with ourselves while practicing these strategies, and with time everything will work out well.
