'La Toilette' (Painting studio)

¡Hey! ¿Qué tal están?

Hoy me encuentro bastante entusiasmada por mostrarles una de mis más recientes obras, que también formó parte de mis estudios de Dibujo y Color en la universidad. En este proyecto debíamos tomar una pintura de épocas pasadas e intentar imitarla —hacer una copia— para así comprender mejor el estilo, la composición y la distribución de los colores.

Estuve buscando entre el Barroco y el Renacimiento, pero realmente no me llevo muy bien con esos estilos. Por supuesto, las obras de esos periodos tienen un valor incalculable, pero difieren un poco de mis gustos personales; y, aunque lo intentara, sabía que me costaría mucho pintar algo sin sentir entusiasmo.

De los movimientos artísticos de siglos pasados, el que más llama mi atención resultó ser aquel que en su momento fue considerado como 'vandalismo artístico', ya que estaba muy alejado del arte académico. Qué curioso, ¿no? Hoy en día este movimiento se estudia en las universidades. Las ironías de la vida.

Terminé por escoger 'La Toilette' de Toulouse-Lautrec. Lo primero que me cautivó de esta obra son los colores, que logran ser sutiles y exagerados al mismo tiempo; pero, además, me atrapó la libertad de su trazo, que consigue generar una respuesta emotiva en el espectador. Es un movimiento fantástico y una obra magnífica.

Al principio dudé mucho de si mi nivel de dibujo era el adecuado para este reto, pero no tenía otra opción: ya la había comenzado y el tiempo para la entrega se agotaba. Solo podía continuar y disfrutar del proceso.

Tardé alrededor de dos semanas en terminarla, y en ese tiempo pude percibir la genialidad que había en sus trazos, colores y figuración. Era, por supuesto, mucho más expresivo, intuitivo y diverso en su composición que cualquier otra obra que hubiera intentado pintar antes. Y los resultados lo confirman.

La reacción del profesor fue buena; como cumplido, me dijo que ya estaba lista para empezar a pintar los retratos de mi familia. Me causó mucha gracia y motivación, aunque no sé si haré eso todavía. De lo que sí estoy segura es de que comenzaré a crear mis propios cuadros, los cuales estaré compartiendo pronto con ustedes también.

Today I’m quite excited to show you one of my most recent works, which was also part of my Drawing and Color studies at the university. For this project, we had to take a painting from the past and try to imitate it—make a copy—to better understand its style, composition, and color distribution.

I spent some time searching between the Baroque and the Renaissance, but I don’t really connect well with those styles. Of course, the works from those periods are invaluable, but they differ a bit from my personal tastes; and I knew that even if I tried, I would struggle to paint something without feeling truly enthusiastic.

Out of all the artistic movements from past centuries, the one that caught my attention turned out to be the one that, at the time, was considered 'artistic vandalism' because it was so far removed from academic art. Funny, right? Nowadays, this movement is studied in universities. Life’s little ironies.

I ended up choosing 'La Toilette' by Toulouse-Lautrec. The first thing that captivated me about this piece were the colors, which manage to be subtle and exaggerated at the same time; but beyond that, I was hooked by the freedom of the brushwork, which manages to trigger an emotional response in the viewer. It is a fantastic movement and a magnificent work of art.

At first, I doubted whether my drawing skills were up to the challenge, but I didn't have much of a choice: I had already started, and the deadline was approaching. All I could do was keep going and enjoy the process.

It took me about two weeks to finish, and during that time, I was able to perceive the genius within the strokes, colors, and figuration. It was, of course, much more expressive, intuitive, and diverse in its composition than any other work I had ever tried to paint before. And the results confirm it.

My professor’s reaction was great; as a compliment, he told me I was ready to start painting portraits of my family. It was both funny and motivating, though I’m not sure if I’ll do that just yet. What I am sure of is that I will start creating my own original paintings, which I will be sharing with you all very soon.
