"...we have all been misguided..."
That is the truth, brother.
"How successful has that been for your kids and yourself?"
My sons are adults now, and highly respected professionals. They love to learn things they're interested in, and I consider that my greatest success in life. As to methods, I know that kids are in the process of learning everything they need to know as adults. They are knowledge sponges - of things they know they need to know. Very few kids think they need to know who fought at Waterloo, and the level of interest they show in such data is appropriate. I taught my kids real useful stuff. How to crash 4x4's and fix them. How to build homes. How to hunt. How to play video games on a computer network. Each of those is a field of interest, and is a heading of an endless suite of subcategories, most of which involve math, history, literature, and economics, and are hard to pry kids off learning about. You might think building homes is something kids might not like, but when they get paid as labor they like it a lot. That's how they got the 4x4's they learned to crash on cat roads on my acreage, and why they were driven to learn to fix them on those 4x4 traps.
When a kid is interested in something it's hard to stop them from learning about it. Interestingly, everything is connected, and a kid that's interested in shooting might read up on it, and learning about firearms can lead to military history, and that can make the battle of Waterloo meaningful. Don't teach kids to hate learning was my only real goal as a homeschooling parent. Kids want to learn a massive amount of stuff, so I tried to enable them to learn how to learn it.
Worked well.
You'll be a grampa soon then lol you old fart. I'm glad your kids had the privilege to have someone like you. They are truly blessed especially in today's western world. Definitely made the right choice to homeschool imo. Schools are child abusive. I would know. I went to them. I didn't have attentive parents who cares about what I did in school only that if I brought in high grades. BUT I was fortunate to have other people in my life that filled in the gaps where a real teacher should be and what real parents should do. I ended up dropping out of highschool officially at 10th grade, basically ASAP. I learned my academia in libraries and in real blue collar work instead. And attended voluntarily anger management classes funded independently from government. I wasn't sure either way how I would turn out but I think I did alright considering the unfair circumstances growing. I never gave up. That's what matters. Now I homeschool myself best time will allow me to.
I had two kids of my own but was kidnapped by ice and deported after a long battle to stay out of prison for life. Was a bunch of trumped up charges from the feds that came up suddenly after I had challenged jurisdiction on immigration court. They were relentless. But I got most of the charges dropped and never had to sign any plea deal.
Anything I did sign I was sure to include "under the threat of violence ,coercion and duress."
Oh, I'm sure I'm a great grampa already, because I have cut a swath across America like Genghis Khan did across Eurasia, only making love, instead of waging war. Not until I was 30 did I even think about settling down and raising a fambly - and some of that fambly actually still talk to me, which I reckon is a pretty good indicator of success at it.
An unstoppable autodidact. Your quest for knowledge and competence wasn't able to be crushed out of you by the abuse of institutions and the institutionalized. Kudos!
Most people could have only a vague idea of what that reality is, but I understand viscerally, because I have suffered similarly, and part of that process is why I today understand that wealth isn't money, that love and affection are the real superpower of civil society, and am absolutely sure good people are going to succeed to surmount the evil bastards that are trying to make all that shit worse so they can enslave us and become even more rich and powerful overlords.
Real wealth can sometimes be purchased for money, but money isn't real wealth. In a world without money that real wealth will still exist and be valuable. In a world without it, money will have no value whatsoever, because life won't be worth living. What humanity really has isn't worth anything without good people to enjoy it with, and I believe most of us know that, if only subconsciously. That threat of violence and duress is NOT the best way to run a railroad, and the technological advance that is ongoing will be used to make the best way reality.
