Recommendation Greenland : how people would react to the end of the world. [Eng/Esp]
Hello, film lovers!
I hope you are all well. Today I'm here to talk to you about one of my favourite apocalyptic films, which, unlike many other films about the end of the world, focuses more on the human component, that is, it shows how people would really act in the face of the end of the world and their desire to survive. This film is called Greenland: The Day the World Ends.
The film introduces us to our protagonists, John Garrity, a successful industrial engineer, his wife, Allison, and their young son, Nathan. Meanwhile, the eyes of the world are on the news that a comet, called Clarke, from a solar system far from ours, will 'pass close to Earth'. The population is informed that this is merely an astronomical and entertainment event, that there is no risk whatsoever, so people prepare for the spectacle. Soon the 'spectacle' turns to horror when it fragments and begins to impact the Earth, causing devastation in its wake.
During this event, John was hosting a gathering at his home with his neighbours, who witnessed the catastrophe. Soon, John's television screen is intercepted by a secret presidential alert (which he had already received before), announcing that he and his family have been chosen to live in a secret shelter. The neighbours, alarmed, hope to have received the same message, which never arrives, while John has only one thought in his mind: to save his family.
So John immediately grabs the essentials to head to the shelter with his family. In the midst of this, a sad moment occurs when John's neighbours, who did not receive the "privilege of survival", begin to hand their children over to John in the hope that he will take them to the shelter. Jhon knew that these children would not be accepted and that his duty was to his family, so he stepped on the accelerator, ignoring the cries of his wife and son.
Soon it is announced that, within 48 hours, the largest fragment of the comet will destroy all life on earth. And so begins the chaos, devastation and suffering. John's desperation to save his family begins, while his journey to the shelter becomes a journey full of violence, anxiety and human error.
Unlike other films about the end of the world, this one focuses on the human factor, the "instinct for survival". It is not just about special effects, but about a father and mother willing to do anything to save their son's life.
A very realistic point that I feel the plot touches on is that only those with the necessary education to rebuild the world were selected for the bunker, that is, 'essential personnel', doctors, scientists and, in John's case, engineers and therefore their families. Although it is also likely that anyone who could pay their way in was allowed to enter. The rest of the professionals or people were not considered necessary.
The film Beyond "It's the End of the World" shows us a more human and realistic version of such an event: John's desperation to get his family to the shelter and the desperation to survive of the people John and his family encounter along the way. So the film is about sacrifice and selfishness, hope and violence, rather than special effects.
The performances of Gerard Butler (John) and Morena Baccarin (Allison) are moving, bringing intensity and authenticity. They are trapped in an impossible situation where they only think about saving their son, even if their actions to achieve this are selfish. So the film has a familiar feel, with difficult moral decisions. The suspense is maintained from beginning to end, which adds impact to the scenes and an emotional charge that I feel can make the minds of those who watch it wander, just by crossing their minds with the idea of "what would I do in such a situation?
The only detail I would highlight is that the special effects could have been more "special," but I also understand that the focus of the film is not "look, the comet is going to fall and wipe us out," but rather how people act in such a moment. Otherwise, the film is entertaining and intense, with drama, action and palpable tension that keeps you glued to the screen as you watch how people act in extreme situations and consider what it means to protect what you love.
This film will have a direct sequel, for which there is already a trailer, and from what I have seen, it will be released in 2020.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Hoy les vengo a hablar de unas de mis películas apocalípticas favoritas, que, a diferencia de muchas otras películas sobre el fin del mundo, se enfoca más en el componente humano, es decir, muestra cómo realmente actuarían las personas ante el fin del mundo y su deseo por sobrevivir. Esta película se llama: Greenland: El día del fin del mundo.
La película nos presenta a nuestros protagonistas Jhon Garrity, un exitoso ingeniero industrial, su esposa, Allison, y su pequeño hijo, Nathan. Mientras que los ojos del mundo están puestos en la noticia de que un cometa, denominado Clarke, de un sistema solar lejano al nuestro, “pasará cerca de la tierra”. A la población se le informa que este es un evento meramente astronómico y de entretenimiento, que no hay riesgo alguno, por lo que las personas se preparan para el espectáculo. Pronto el “espectáculo”, se vuelve horror, cuando este se fragmenta y comienza a impactar en la tierra, provocando devastación a su paso.
Durante este hecho, se celebraba una reunión en casa de Jhon con sus vecinos, quienes presenciaron la catástrofe. Pronto, la pantalla del televisor de Jhon es interceptada por una alerta presidencial secreta (que ya había recibido antes), anunciándole que él y su familia fueron escogidos para vivir en un refugio secreto. Los vecinos, alarmados, esperan haber recibido el mismo mensaje, el cual nunca llega, mientras en la mente de Jhon solo existe un pensamiento: Salvar a su familia.
Por lo que Jhon inmediatamente agarra lo esencial para dirigirse al refugio con su familia. En medio de esto se produce un triste momento cuando vecinos de Jhon quienes no recibieron el “privilegio de sobrevivir”, empiezan a entregarle a sus hijos a Jhon con la esperanza de que los lleve al refugio. Jhon sabía que esos niños no serían aceptados y su deber era con su familia, por lo que procedió a pisar a fondo el acelerador, ante los gritos de su esposa e hijo.
Pronto se anuncia que, dentro de 48 horas, el fragmento más grande del cometa, acabará con toda vida en la tierra. Y es así, como empieza el caos, la devastación y el sufrimiento. E inicia la desesperación de Jhon por salvar a su familia, mientras su ida al refugio se convierte en una travesía llena de violencia, ansiedad y errores humanos. A diferencia de otras películas sobre el fin del mundo, esta se centra en el factor humano, el “instinto de sobrevivencia”, no se trata solo de efectos especiales, sino de un padre y una madre dispuestos a todo para salvar la vida de su hijo.
Un punto muy realista que siento que toca la trama, es que solo fueron seleccionadas para el búnker, aquellas personas con los estudios necesarios para reconstruir el mundo, es decir, “personal esencial”, doctores, científicos y, en el caso de Jhon, ingenieros y por ende sus familias. Aunque también es probable que entraran todas aquellas personas que pudieran pagar su entrada. El resto de profesionales o personas no fueron consideradas necesarias.
La película más allá de “es el fin del mundo” nos muestra una versión más humana y real de un suceso así: la desesperación de Jhon por poner a su familia en el refugio y la desesperación por vivir de las personas con las que Jhon y su familia se encontrarán en el camino. Por lo que la película trata del sacrificio y el egoísmo, en la esperanza y en la violencia, más que en los efectos especiales.
Las actuaciones de Gerard Butler (Jhon) y Morena Baccarin (Allison), son estremecedoras, aportan intensidad y autenticidad. Están atrapados en una situación imposible en donde solo piensan en la salvación de su hijo, aunque su actuar para lograr esto, sea egoísta. Por lo que la película tiene un toque familiar, con decisiones morales difíciles. El suspenso se mantiene de principio a fin, lo que le agrega impacto a las escenas y una carga emocional que siento, puede hacer fluir la mente de las personas que la ven, al solo cruzarles la idea de ¿qué haría yo en una situación así?
El único detalle que resaltaría es que los efectos especiales pudieron ser más “especiales”, pero también entiendo que el enfoque de la película no es “mira, el cometa va a caer y nos extinguirá”, sino, el actuar de las personas en un momento así. De resto, la película es entretenida e intensa, con drama, acción y una tensión que es palpable y te mantiene con la mirada fija en la pantalla, mientras vez cómo actúan las personas en situaciones extremas y te planteas qué significa proteger lo que amas.
Esta película tendrá una secuela directa, de la que ya hay un tráiler, y por lo que he visto, se estrenará en 2026.

Esta película me gustó mucho, de hecho la he visto varias veces y no aburre para nada. Gerald Butler es un actor genial, todas sus películas son buenas. Los efectos son fantásticos y de verdad que da miedo estar en un momento de esos.
Siii, la película se acerca bastante en lo que una situación así generaría en las personas. Ya no puedo esperar a que estrenen la secuela.
