I was thinking of watching that film, but I had heard negative reviews.

It was meant to be a scary movie but kids are the main target so that can't make it too scary.
But as I understand it, most of the audience are people who grew up playing the games.
Yes of course, the franchise is a classic and it's inspired by Chuck E Cheese, which is a pizza place made for kids. At one point they had animatronics playing music.
