Cine TV Contest #138 - Papa Ajasco & Company ; My Favorite Sitcom of All Time

Hello my movie family here on hive. Welcome to my blog once again. When I saw the Cine Tv contest #138 about a favorite comedy sitcom I had to start thinking about the last time I ever watched a comic movie and I discovered that its been ages I did that, let say I was still a child then. Recently, I have been watching Kdramas, American movies and my kind of movies are horror, adventure and hospital scenes. Social media have made things quite easy that you could watch lots of comedy on the internet anytime and with ease.

But come to think of it, when I reflected on the last comedy sitcom that I had watch, the only one that I can never forget the experience and how they made me laugh is the Nigerian sitcom “Papa Ajasco & Company.” Ahh, if you have never seen Papa Ajasco & Company then you miss a lot.

Back in my childhood days, as soon as it is time, then it was always every Tuesdays 8pm to 8:30pm and on Thursdays, everyone will assemble at the sitting room including my father that is to tell you how interesting it was. Our neighbors would always join us to watch and the whole house was always full of laughter, nobody dares send us any errand once it was time for us to watch papa Ajasco.

Papa Ajasco & Company is a Nigerian family television sitcom that is created and produced by Wale Adenuga. It’s a 30 minutes sitcom with six amusing characters; Papa Ajasco, Mama Ajasco, Bobo Ajasco, Boy Alinco, Miss Pepeiye, Pa James and Pa Jimoh.

papa Ajasco is the main funny character here, he is bald-headed with a round belly and love for women, every time he got caught in a lie or scandal, he would slap his shiny bald head repeatedly and shout “Ojigbijigbijigbi!” with his eye glasses shaking on his nose. Just looking at him, you already want to laugh.

His dressing alone is very funny, he always wear a big shirt that’s too colorful for one person and he would pull his trousers up so high almost touching his chest. He had no control over his desires, especially when it comes to women, he’s married o, but that doesn’t stop him from chasing every fine woman he sees. The funny part is, he always gets caught always.

Mama Ajasco was his ever patient and suspicious wife, she would always nag, roll her eyes and chase papa Ajasco with slippers. She is a typical example of Nigerian mothers, she is tough, loud and always ready for a showdown, one minute she is crying and the next minute she is fighting, even though she complains a lot she still loved papa Ajasco.

The scene is always very funny that even women in our neighborhood tried to mimic her most times. I even remember most times my mum would do same, she would always chase us with her bathroom slippers whenever we do something wrong and we would always call her mama Ajasco.

Bobo Ajasco was their son, he was a true definition of a “child with adult mouth.” The small boy with a big mouth. He is a very sarcastic human being with that small cap sitting stubbornly on his head.

Boy Alinco was another amusing character, he’s always forming fine boy, chasing girls around and when they reject him, he’ll still adjust his shirt like nothing happened.

All the actors were funny, these are just the few characters I would never forget their comic show, because they made me laugh a lot.

Why Papa Ajasco & Company Is My Favorite Sitcom of All Time

This sitcom is not just funny, it is real , it is unforgettable and it displays what happens in our society, no matter how sad you seem to be, watching it alone will make you forget your sad mood because you will laugh a lot, even today, just thinking about the characters makes me smile.

When I was younger, every evening felt like a small celebration when Papa Ajasco came on TV. My family would gather in the sitting room and our neighbours would come around, no matter how tired we were, no matter how bad the day was, as soon as the theme song started, we would all begin to laugh before the episode even started. It was fun and it was family bonding time.

Now, I can not remember the last time we all sat together in the sitting room watching funny sitcoms together as family like in those days.

The characters were naturally very funny, every character in the show had their own kind of foolishness and I mean that in the best way.

One other thing I loved about Papa Ajasco & Company was that you didn’t need to think too hard to enjoy it, the jokes were simple, fun and very Nigerian. The stories were things we all understood, even my grandparents understood and watched happily, it all displayed family wahala, stubborn children, greedy adults, gossiping neighbors. These are things we see in real life and that made the whole sitcom very interesting.

Some episodes had lessons too, they showed how lying can bring shame, or how greed leads to disgrace, but they did it in a way that made you laugh while learning. It wasn’t forced, it just flowed naturally and I enjoyed every episode.

Despite all other funny sitcoms I have seen, Papa Ajasco & Company would always remain my favorite.
