This particular anime, which we're going to cover today, was very controversial in its time and little understood, as it touched on very profound themes for its time.

Evangelion renewed and raised the standards of the mecha genre, integrating a more complex, philosophical, and psychological narrative, breaking with conventional formulas of good guys and bad guys, and introducing introspective and existential themes.

The series tackled profound themes such as depression, anxiety, identity, loneliness, and existential anxiety, which was groundbreaking in the anime medium in the 1990s. This inspired many creators and subsequent series to explore similar themes.

Evangelion

Let's use the reference image as a guide, which clearly represents this series, as its shots and settings are rooted in themes that, for me, are somewhat psychedelic.

We put together a sketch of the body and the eye it's resting on to guide us. Notice how we can form the character's body using traditional circles and lines.

In this step we are going to outline everything very well with India ink and black marker as a coloring base for some dark parts and trying to vary between dark and thick lines and super thin lines.

Once the sketch is finished, we erase everything so we can paint and the color doesn't get stained. This time I'm going to use colors.

COLORING

When coloring, I always start with the base color, which I'm used to using as a very light shade, then darken where the shadows of the same color would go, and so on.

For the blue eye color, I'll use a blue pencil for that vibrant color and alternate with blue colors of different shades.

Now that I'm using India ink, I find that when I erase everything, it looks much more polished. Of course, you have to be very careful not to smudge or run the ink.

And we start by adding a deep red with the marker and a lighter color with pink highlights. We color the hair in the same way, always using the shadows and highlights of the original artwork as a guide.

It is true that the color red needs a slightly darker tone so that the colors do not become confused or mixed, so we should always degrade the tones.

Transparency is achieved by using white and a very light color, then blending with white, a color we don't usually use, but it gives very good results.

Once the design is finished, I have to say that although I really like the result, with practice and perseverance, it can always be improved.
