With Zcash back in the spotlight, a wild experience from earlier this year:
A stash of Zcash was accumulated on Coinbase before it was available on any DEX, with plans to move everything into self-custody. Zashi was downloaded and the first wallet it generated was tested.
After getting comfortable, the wallet was reset and the new seed phrase saved.
When ready to transfer, the wallet address was copied and about a dozen ZEC was sent from Coinbase—not huge, but not insignificant.
An hour later the transaction still hadn’t arrived. After waiting, it looked like the funds went to the wrong address. It seemed impossible, since the correct address had been copied and such a mistake hadn’t happened before.
Investigation revealed the cause: a bug that cached addresses from the first private key and persisted even after loading a new phrase.
Even with a completely new private key loaded, the app still showed addresses for the old seed. Everything appeared normal until a full reset caused the correct addresses to display.
The team was contacted and handled it professionally: the bug was fixed and a refund for the lost ZEC was issued. That response prevented a potentially significant loss, and the wallet experience has been great since
