I was absolutely countered!

I'm not sure if you all are getting the same impressions as I am, but it’s been months now that Splinterlands has become extremely competitive, making it harder and harder to climb leagues. I used to be able to reach Champion II by the end of the season, but now I struggle to reach Champion III, taking more than half the season to achieve that.

Most of my opponents have extremely powerful collections and are highly experienced, and since my entirely rented collection doesn’t use max-level cards, I have to try and come up with crazy strategies to overpower the brute force of my adversaries. Currently, my rare summoners are at level 6 and the legendary ones at level 3, allowing me to use cards at a level where most of them have gained their final ability and have powerful stats (although nothing will quite compare to max-level cards).

Of course, trying to always stay a step ahead of the opponent isn’t an easy task. Many times I fail miserably, and the brutal strength of the enemy composition simply overpowers my strategies. But some matches, like the one I'll share with you today, really drive the nail in the coffin and leave me humbled by defeat 😅.

The battle had the Standard rule set, 55 mana, and 4 out of the 6 elements available. Since it was straightforward with many possibilities open, I opted for a speed-based strategy to buy time by using Coeurl Lurker as a dodge tank while Carnage Titan attacked the enemy tank, and Dragon Jumper handled the weaker cards. As a secondary strategy, I placed Kron the Undying in the last position to possibly withstand some Sneak attacks, and in case he was the only one left, the Last Stand ability could secure victory, considering his Heal and the Tank Heal from the summoner Byzantine Kitty. However, when the match started, I was met with the following opponent’s lineup:

Battle.

Besides balancing speed a bit with a Slow card and another with Swiftness , my cards received two damage debuffs, which drastically reduced my team's offensive potential. But the worst was the double Taunt , which would have two of my cards attacking the enemy tank while the rest focused on Terraceous Hulk.

All the damage dealt to Arkemis the Bear became almost useless because Goblin Psychic was healing +4 health each round, and Arkemis not only dealt considerable damage with Enrage active, but also halved my card's damage with each hit, further limiting my team's offensive capabilities.

At this point, I was already feeling down, sensing defeat was inevitable. The funniest part is that only after finally taking down Terraceous did I realize Mycelic Slipspawn was still there to redirect my attacks, and it was awful. To top it off, when Kron moved to the first position and activated his Last Stand , he was immediately hit with a Dispel and a Halving , killing any faint hope I had left of winning this battle.

There was nothing left to do but admit that my opponent had crafted a much better strategy and completely countered me, so all credit goes to them for this incredible victory. Splinterlands is a game that stirs many emotions, and it’s always surprising what can happen in a match 😆.

I think the reason is the reward chests. Players without staked SPS become more active to reach the higher league to get reward chests.
I faced a lot of strong players without staked SPS recently.

Makes sense; it’s a way to earn rewards without needing to invest in SPS or rentals.

The opponent had two really good taunt cards and have a lot of halving ability. You took a lot of damage due to the halving cards, overall, a better strategy than you actually did.
