The familiar weight of her rifle felt coldly comforting against her shoulder as Aisha adjusted the worn leather strap. Although she was not a soldier by profession, they had no choice but to deal with the warlord Kael's looming shadow. Their futures had been stolen, their crops plundered, and their wells poisoned by him. He now called for their annihilation or submission. Along with 350 other villagers, including farmers, weavers, elders, and even young people who could wield a stick, Aisha had decided to fight—the impossible third option.
They had improvised their training and improvised their weapons. They possessed a fierce, cohesive spirit and an unwavering love for their homelands, however, which Kael's ruthless army did not. Every secret gully and whispering rock in the area was familiar to them. They were aware of how to live off of rations and how to move soundlessly beneath the wide, watchful sky.
The sky was painted in fiery hues as the sun sank below the horizon, and Aisha experienced a sudden calm. Despite not being an army, they were a force. A collective force of 350 individuals united by a common desire for freedom and desperation. Instead of simply going to war, they would be the war, a wave of resistance to Kael's oppression. As she gripped her rifle more tightly, she stared at the looming darkness. The plains would resound with their disobedience tonight.
