The Ten Thousand Dollar Bill ?!?!

avatar

Here's something cool I learnt today!

Meet the biggest denomination bill ever printed by the United States of America:

(public domain)

10 thousand fucking dollars!

Featuring President Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon P. Chase, it never got much traction. Which is quite understandable considering how the net worth of the average American was much much less back in the 1918 when it was first printed!

Officially, it was discontinued on July 14, 1969, by the Federal Reserve System due to "lack of use" although it had effectively disappeared well before that time...

However it is still considered legal tender so if you happen to own (lol) one of the few hundred surviving pieces you can probably still use it...Imagine the funny reactions you would get if you tried to use one to buy a pack of cigarettes or something...And making a fuss when you would be told it's fake money. Great idea for a YouTube prank 😂😂

And who knows? Maybe it will make a reappearance now thanks to the inflation we are experiencing? 😶😅😂

Anyways...

Wanna see something even cooler?

Here's a 100k bill:

US-$100000-GC-1934-Fr-2413.jpg
(public domain)

Now this is not a bill but a gold certificate featuring a portrait of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States from 1913 to 1921.

However, it was never circulated or issued for public use. They were created by The Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1934 during the great depression with the intention to be used for transactions between Federal Reserve banks.

Ok plebs, hope you enjoyed reading about these two unique monetary oddities from the US. Feel free to hit the references down below to read more about them and to check some more oddities, like the 5000 $ bill!

Having the opportunity to learn about these historical monetary oddities is like stepping into a hidden treasure trove of American currency history. The $10,000 bill featuring Salmon P. Chase and the 100k gold certificate with Woodrow Wilson are fascinating relics of a bygone era. It's incredible to think about how much the financial landscape has evolved since then. The idea of using one of these bills today for a YouTube prank is both hilarious and intriguing – talk about a unique social experiment! Thanks for sharing these intriguing and facinating pieces of history with us. It is a captivating glimpse into the world of money.

A 10 thousand dollar bill is fun to use for shopping. True, its price is now 500k dollars on ebay.

What's really fun is printing them out on a good printer, getting a frame and putting it up on your wall as a conversation piece.

I hope they never bring these denominations back... if you get my drift. I remember in 2008 visiting a bank and there was a sign up that was giving fun facts: who is pictured on the 10,000 and 100,000 bill? That got me pretty nervous, is there something they're not telling us?

I’ve seen a 10,000 note at a coin show once years ago. But I’ve never seen the 100,000 gold note.

Very cool bills! I always felt Chase belonged there, he was a talented man. But they could have found at least a founding father or better yet Liberty for the $100K.

We're sure that $10,000 bought a lot more in 1918 than $10,000 now.

The bill is probably worth more than a 10000 in collector value 🤣

I have not seen one in person, maybe because they were used exclusively for bank transfers and other large transactions. Needless to say, this bill was rare back then and it's extremely rare now.
Good article, @trumpman !

I thought these bills never existed but I guess if they were not for public use, that was why.

How the conversation probably went at the Federal Reserve Bank: " Hey Bill, I got a great idea on how we can dunk on the poor and unwashed masses: let's print something they will only hear about and never see or use!
Great idea Joe, nothing screams Freedom more than poking fun at the wealth gap "

Oh hell nah, never knew $10k note ever existed..!LOL

I wonder why US don't introduce new notes like such, now?

Here with my local currency; they introduce new note every other independence day almost... and lol people think it's fake and don't accept at stores..

That 100k Gold certificate sound like a pretty cool idea.. but can't imagine a 100k vanishing in a moment just because the paper got spoiled or burn etc.

I'd love to see one of these in person. The owner of a coin shop in the US that I used to go to worked network security at a bank for several years before he opened his coin shop; he said that the bank had an internal museum that had all the larger than $100 bills displayed. I would have loved to seen that room.

Wow, those are some amazing facts! I had no idea that the United States had ever printed bills of such high denominations. It's interesting to think about how much money has changed in value over the years.

I can imagine that trying to use a $10,000 bill to buy a pack of cigarettes would be quite a scene! I'm sure the cashier would be very confused.

I also wonder why the $100,000 gold certificate was never circulated. It seems like it would have been a valuable tool during the Great Depression.

And now the powers that be wanna discontinue $100 notes due to its high value and use for crime, meanwhile it was a dollar note in terms of 100 years ago. Just shows it should be going other way! A $100 note in 1970 was like $1000 today. Inflation is doing the job for them of getting big notes outta system but they still push to take larger bills outta system.
