The Philosopher of Pessimism (10 Marks, 1988)

(Edited)

What's up plebs?

Guess what! I am back with yet another piece of silver from Germany! Who would have thought ๐Ÿ˜…

Let's see what we have this time!

Looks like a homeless guy or something ๐Ÿ˜‚

But a closer inspection on the engravings reveals it's a coin dedicated to Arthur Schopenhauer.

More specifically, this is a commemorative coin minted in 1988 for his 200th birthday.

If you have never heard of him before, he was a German philosopher best known for his 1818 work "The World as Will and Representation".

Here's a quick breakdown of his philosophical beliefs:

Schopenhauer saw his philosophy as an extension of Kant's, and used the results of Kantian epistemological investigation (transcendental idealism) as starting point for his own. Kant had argued that the empirical world is merely a complex of appearances whose existence and connection occur only in our mental representations. Schopenhauer did not deny that the external world existed empirically but followed Kant in claiming that our knowledge and experience of the world is always indirect.

Schopenhauer reiterates this in the first sentence of his main work: "The world is my representation (Die Welt ist meine Vorstellung)". Everything that there is for cognition (the entire world) exists simply as an object in relation to a subjectโ€”a 'representation' to a subject. Everything that belongs to the world is, therefore, 'subject-dependent'. In Book One of The World as Will and Representation, Schopenhauer considers the world from this angleโ€”that is, insofar as it is representation. source

Nothing mind blowing if you ask me. Haven't we all had similar thoughts during a good high? I know I did. I just didn't happen to be a white rich German boy with lots of free time back in the 1700s ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜‚

Often called the "Philosopher of Pessimism" he was born on February 22, 1788, in Danzig, Poland. His father was Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer a wealthy merchant and his mother was Johanna Schopenhauer who later became a quite famous author in Germany. Talk about getting an early start in life ๐ŸŽ๏ธ

His work didn't get much recognition during his life but that changed following his death across a spectrum of fields. โ˜ ๏ธ

Though his work failed to garner substantial attention during his lifetime, Schopenhauer had a posthumous impact across various disciplines, including philosophy, literature, and science. His writing on aesthetics, morality, and psychology have influenced many thinkers and artists. source

Overall, his work had quite an impact on his field for which I don't have much interest, lmao. Here's a link to Britannica and one to wikipedia if you want to learn more about his life!

In the meantime, let's flip my coin and take a look on the other side:

As typical, we have a unique design of the imperial eagle, and this one is pretty slick if you ask me.

It is designed by Hans Joachim Dobler for whom I couldn't find much info. It seems like he has designed four commemorative marks and the eagles on all four are really bad ass! I only have two of them and I am definitely ordering the other two very soon!

Finally, we have the engraved edge:

It reads

DIE WELT ALS WILLE UND VORSTELLUNG

For

The World as Will and Idea

As aforementioned, this is the title of his central work published in 1818 so there's nothing much to elaborate here.

The coin has a weight of 15.5 g with a purity of 0.625, which is pretty much the standard for commemorative 10 mark coins minted before 2000. This sums up to about 9.7 g of pure silver.

Ok plebs, this is it for today. Hope you enjoyed yet another quick historic lesson from my silver collection!

See you soon with more shiny ๐Ÿฅฐ

He is one of my favorite philosophers. I like his views about life. I believe they are not pessimistic; they are realistic. And also like his hairstyle :)

Great coin! Have you ever found why they go for 62.5% purity in a commemorative coin? You'd think they'd want to go higher for something that special.

Through all these coins I am also learning about some philosophers. I had never heard of this name and now I see that this man was one of Nietzsche's mentors. Thanks man!

This is a coin of little value today in the coin market as I think. But his work makes a lot of sense.
