The King of Operettas!
What's up plebs?
Trumpy boy returns with yet another silver piece from Austria. I believe this is the last one I own (for now) from that country. I guess I'll take a quick look tomorrow and share anymore I might own and get over with said country.
As always, let's first take a look before learning more about it and the history behind it:
Looks like we have some old bald dude called Franz Lehar. Now that's someone I have never heard before.
Turns out he was an Austro-Hungarian composer born in 1870 in the northern part of Komárom. He is considered to be a "giant" in the world of operetta, a type of light, musical comedies with spoken dialogue. His most famous works were "The Merry Widow" (Die lustige Witwe) which is still performed today! His operettas are characterized by their romantic and sometimes satirical nature.

By the way we have three engraved dates here. "1870-1948" which are the years of birth and death of Lehar. And "1970" which is the minting date of the coin, issued for the 100th Anniversary since his birth.

Like the rest of the Austrian shillings I have shown you, we have the denomination (25 schillings), the coats of arms of the Austrian states and the text

Silverwise, the recipe is the same ol'. 13 g of 0.800 silver, the rest being copper. Giving us 10.4 g of pure silver.

Ah, another piece of history from Austria! The anticipation is palpable. Can't wait to see what this latest addition to your collection has in store.
Coins with such different shapes are very beautiful.
Technically, such coins - same as the 10 DM German coins - were "in circulation" back then. They were official currency, like any other Schilling coin or note. But of course thats not what people got them for. The goal was for most, to have all the coins that were issued over the years - and thats quite lot. Since the number of coins ws pretty small for each issue, it was kind a tricky to get your hands on them (at a bank) quick enough. Best was if you knew someone who worked there and would put one on the side for you.
Also technically, Schilling and DM, and all the other currencies in EU countries before the Euro was introduced, are still valid. You cannot use them to buy stuff in shops anymore, but you can send them in to the central bank of the country in question. They will then pay out the amount in Euro according to the official exchange rate that was set in 1999. Its thought that there are still billions of old money hidden in books and old furniture, which were forgotten to get exchanged at the time.
Ha, that I didn't know. Still not worth it I guess because the silver is worth more. People accumulating back then surely made a nice buck!
No, the coins are a better deal now. But if people find some money stash they can get it changed into Euro still, even after 20 years now.

I hate to watch operettas, the genre I dislike the most. But, it is hell of fun to play in one. I once had the opportunity for a small role in one and it was amazing.
