Ouchie!

This is one of those crazy medical cases I blog about every now and then.

And this one is really, really crazy!

So, this one about a guy that got a chopstick in his eye. Big deal, I hear you saying.

Not the first, not the last one that got accidentally penetrated in the eye by whatever.

Here's the plot twist though. This guy had a chopstick in his fucking orbit for 3 weeks and it took doctors 3 weeks to discover it!

Can't blame them really, the patient had 10/10 vision after the incident and minimal symptoms.

But how this came to be?

Let's take it from the start.

It all began when the patient had a collision with a friend after drinking too much alcohol. My guess, he was drunk as fuck.

Anyways, moving on.. Over the coming days the patient had some pain and swelling in the left orbit but the doctors didn't find anything suspicious,so they just send him home with meds for the symptoms

The patient felt pain and swelling in the left orbit, so he went to a local medical facility for treatment. Here, doctors did not detect any foreign objects and the patient was treated with medicaments and further monitored.

The days pass though and he only gets worse and worse so about 3 weeks after the incident he goes to a local university hospital

The patient was noted to have pain and swelling in the left orbit, without abnormalities in the eye movement or losing vision. Ophthalmologic examination revealed 10/10 vision, with no signs of globe injury. However, the left eye was swollen and there was a discharge of pus from the corner of the left eye. The patient complained of pain, suggesting that the condition could be serious and required prompt intervention.

One CT scan and a nasal endoscopy later and the culprit was revealed.

A 9 cm hopstick. Which btw had traces of food on it. Not very hygienic 😂

Now if I get this right, the chopstick penetrated the patient from the nose or mouth wall and ended up right behind his eye, which by a miracle of chance survived both the penetration and the infection that could have resulted by the injury !

Suspected foreign body is a chopstick, size #9cm, penetrated from the soft tissue outside the left orbit through the floor (the upper wall of the maxillary sinus), and destroyed the lateral nasal wall of at the place of inferior meatus to the hard palate.

Yeah...Ouchie ! What a crazy case 😄

I guess the moral of the story is...Avoid Chinese with alcohol? 😄

Amazing that he didn't sever the optic nerve. That orbit will have to be rebuilt completely, his doctors are going to love those surgical fees. He's as lucky as hell he's not blind, but that's going to be one long ass recover!

What the actual F, how even?
I mean, he himself didn't know he had gotten a chopstick stuck inside his head, how did it happen without him noticing. Bro must have been drunk as a skunk.

It's quite disturbing, but (and not in a mean way) kind of funny.

Ouch, that sounds rough. I am glad that it didn't end up as a horror story and that the issue was solved.
