🐙 TIL About Octopus Wrestling 🐙

Allow me to introduce you to what probably is the dumbest sport ever invented.

Meet octopus wrestling lol:

This bizarre sport was somewhat popular in the mid-20th century and involved divers grappling with octopuses underwater.

Despite the name, it was much less dramatic than what it sounds like, since octopuses typically flee potential predators and don't actually put much of a fight. In other words, there really wasn't much wrestling going on:

The contestants were usually only searching in holes along rocks in the ocean to grab the head of an octopus. Once a diver caught an octopus he continued to pull until the animal gave up.

First reports of the sport come from 1949 and it reached its peak at the 1960s with the annual World Octopus Wrestling Championships held in Puget Sound, Washington. The event was even televised lmao!

As for the octopuses.. They were either eaten, donated to local aquariums or just released back to the wild.

In case you wonder, the record for the largest octopus caught during an octopus wrestling competition was a 57-pound giant Pacific Octopus during the 1963 World Octopus Wrestling Championships. Damn, that's a big octopus 🐙

The sport was short lived and eventually died.

And that's the quick story of Octopus Wrestling.

There is some more info on Wikipedia if you'd like to read more on this dumb thing 😂

My goodness man Octopus wrestling sounds wild but not too surprising given some of the strange sports we've seen. This is both scary and funny to me when I think about it hehehehe

It sounds like a weird little competition but 57 lbs? That is one heavy and large octopus then.

This sport is for weaklings, let them go to the fish market, pick the biggest octopus seller and tell him that they are taking the octopus, but they will not pay. Then, grab the octopus and start pulling it in the opposite direction from the seller, who wants his octopus back... now that's what you can call a sport! :) !VSC

I really thought octopuses were wrestling in the ocean and it was very strange. And now it feels weird that it's being done as a sport XD

Octopus wrestling? As far as coming up with different ways to bother, abuse and exploit animals, people seem to be incredibly creative. How about shark wrestling? In the ocean, no equipment, just bare hands. That would be fun to watch! :)
