How Not to Impress A Guest.

Hello dear friends and family… yeah… I said family cause ,you all readers automatically became my family.lol.. back to business, oya let's go…. I can still remember the day clearly like it just happened yesterday, I was in primary school, maybe around Primary 5 or so, I cannot remember very well,I had invited one of my friends “Mercy” over to the house after school ,You know that excitement of having a guest over, especially when it is someone from school you just want everything to be just perfect ehn… I don’t know what entered me that day o, but I decided I was going to cook something for her and not just anything it was noodles.

At that age, I already knew how to boil water and do small kitchen runs, normal na, So in my head, I was already a certified chef ,lolz. I didn’t even ask my mum for permission, I just entered the kitchen like one serious somebody, my life…hehe. I brought out two packs of noodles, checked the cupboard for pepper , and poured water into the pot with confidence. I felt like I was about to host a cooking show , in my mind o.

So the water boiled ,I poured in the noodles, added the seasoning, and even tried to be extra by slicing in onions and putting pepper, The funniest part was when I added curry and thyme like I saw my elder sister do one time like that, I didn’t even know if it matched noodles or not ,I was just doing chef things , I stirred everything and waited for the water to dry completely.

As the noodles cooked, the aroma started filling the kitchen, and I was feeling like a star, Omo …my friend was in the sitting room, and I kept going back and forth, telling her, “Just wait, food is almost ready.” I was so proud of myself , imagine my small mind lol…

Luckily, everything I needed was already in the house, so there was no need to go to the market ,I just ransacked the kitchen like a mini chef on a mission , I saw what I believed was Ukazi leaf at least it looked close enough. I gathered palm oil, Maggi, something that looked like stockfish, and even ogiri that had a smell strong enough to chase away mosquitoes. I didn’t bother tying wrapper like my mom used to do , lolz…..I just wore my regular clothes and confidently stepped into the kitchen. That was where the real drama began.

Oh wait.....scratch that! 😂 I’m mixing up two stories. That one was when I tried to cook soup later in life. Back to the noodle saga... Lol.

When the food was finally done , I dished it into two stainless plates and served my friend Mercy, We sat down and started eating, First bite, she nodded and smiled. Second bite, she paused, I asked her, “You no like am?” She said, “It is nice…” but the way her face twisted, I knew something was off, I tasted mine again and realized I had added way too much curry and Maggi. Ewoooooo,...... 😂. The thing was salty and yellow like Jollof gone wrong.

That day we both laughed and ended up not finishing it, eat what!? Lol .But that experience taught me something i really did enjoy the process ,Even though the food somehow flopped, we had so much fun that day, It felt like I had done something big, something adult-ish.(In my dry mind) Lol..

Well that was one of my funniest childhood kitchen moments ,and till today, my friend still reminds me of “the yellow noodles day.” We laugh every time we talk about it.
