The Web's two faces

The internet is one of the greatest inventions of our time. It has completely changed the way we live, work, and interact with one another. With just a few clicks, you can connect with someone on the other side of the world, learn new skills, build a business, or even find love. I still remember when there was little or no access to the internet; getting information was stressful and time-consuming. You would have to visit libraries, make countless phone calls, or even travel long distances just to get what you needed. Today, those struggles have been reduced greatly because the internet has made life easier in so many ways.

However, as much as the internet has brought many blessings, it has also opened doors to a lot of problems. It is sad to see how people misuse it to carry out evil acts. One of the most heartbreaking issues is the abuse of children online. Many adults who should be protecting children are the very ones harming them through online platforms. There are countless cases of adults chatting with children, pretending to care for them, only to exploit or abuse them. It is even more painful to know that some of these adults know very well that they are talking to minors, yet they continue with their harmful actions.

Parents also have a role to play in this problem. These days, many children are given phones and access to the internet at a very young age, often without proper guidance or supervision. A lot of parents don’t fully understand the dangers of the online space. They simply tell their children to “be careful” without setting strong boundaries or monitoring what they do online. This early exposure to the internet can be harmful because children are easily influenced. Some end up getting trapped in online vices such as sexual abuse, cyberbullying, and even internet fraud. Sadly, society is now dealing with the consequences of these actions, and many young people are paying the price.

Despite these challenges, we can not deny that the internet has also brought tremendous opportunities. It has made it easier for people to meet genuine friends and even find life partners. Businesses now thrive online, with many people connecting with customers they may never meet physically. Education has also improved, as students can now access countless resources to support their learning. In many ways, the internet has opened doors that were once unimaginable.

At the end of the day, the internet itself is neither good nor bad. It is simply a tool, and what we get from it depends on how we use it. If used wisely, it can be a blessing that brings growth, connection, and opportunities. But if misused, it becomes a curse, leading to pain, destruction, and regret. This is why everyone, parents, children, and society as a whole, must take responsibility. We need to educate ourselves and others, set boundaries, and hold people accountable for their actions. The internet can either build us or break us; the choice is ours.

Yes, what can we do to sensitise our people who engage in such adventures?
