The Silent Debt: Why Help Often Comes at a Cost

I have learned something in life: it is not wise to depend entirely on others for help or assistance. Some people have a habit of wanting to be in control, telling you what to do even when they are unsure whether their advice will yield a positive outcome. It is better to be independent—take advice, but not orders. Make yourself a scarce resource and think outside the box. Even if you choose to follow someone’s suggestion, take time to ponder over it. Let your words be measured; avoid speaking too much when there is no need for it.

One thing is certain, humans often use others to fulfil their own purposes and objectives by appealing to their sense of duty. As the saying goes, "Nothing is free, even in a freetown ." This statement is not far from the truth, as those who offer help often expect something in return, whether in cash or in kind. Whatever the case may be, it is always wise to question the motive behind sudden support or assistance, especially if it is something you neither requested nor truly need.

The human mind harbours both good and evil, and in many cases, it is quick to unleash its dark side on unsuspecting prey. I am not saying all human beings are evil, but many minds are inherently inclined toward selfishness and malice. This is why a friend can turn into an enemy out of envy, especially if you surpass them in success. Rather than uplift you, they may seek to bring you down. In fact, sometimes, an enemy can be more loyal than a friend because they have more to prove. It is often said that a known enemy can do you no harm because you are already aware of their intentions.

People have a tendency to remind you of the help they have rendered in the past, especially when they find themselves in a tight situation or feel that you have risen above them. They will point out their contributions to your success, subtly implying that you owe them something in return. While it is true that no one achieves success entirely on their own, it is wiser to seek assistance from those who stand to benefit from your plans rather than from those who have little or nothing to gain. When seeking help, it is best to be upfront about what is in it for them, whether a profit or some other benefit, so they understand the value of their support.

These are just my thoughts, nothing more.
