Moments We Never Plan For
As human beings, there are things that happen which are beyond human imagination. At times, you may be talking about one thing while another thing is happening entirely. Just this morning, we received terrible news about a staff member who lost his children to an oncoming vehicle. It was so unfortunate, as the children were just about to cross the road in front of their school.
There was a trailer blocking the view of the children, which made it quite difficult to see the other side of the road. Luckily, it was not as brutal as it could have been because the trailer managed to apply its brakes. We were even relieved when we heard that they survived, although they sustained various degrees of injuries.
What I asked myself was: imagine the kind of trauma the family must be going through at this particular point in time. These are things people never really plan for. Nobody ever plans or thinks that evil will befall them, and there is no way they could have prepared for such an incident. However, it could have been avoided if there had been signposts indicating that students cross there or that a school is nearby. Unfortunately, this rarely happens in Nigeria, except perhaps in some urban areas.

It is often only when calamity stares us in the face that we begin to think about what we could have done better.
Although no matter how careful we are, there are some circumstances we have no power over. However, some situations are within our control as humans.
Sadly, only a few people are ready to take responsibility for their actions. Not all humans are willing to admit they were wrong, no matter how clear the situation is. Nobody wants to take the blame.
Yet, it is always good to take responsibility for our actions. It does not cost us too much, but many people focus only on what it might cost them, without because responsibility can sometimes outweigh the outcome, or vice versa.
They say life is a box of chocolates; we never know what we will get until we pick one. When life favours us, we believe we have won the lottery. But when the other side of life shows up, it feels as though we suddenly know nothing or are seen as mediocre.
We can never be too careful in life. We must do what we can to prevent evil. There are calamities before us today that are solely the result of action and inaction.
