ACHIEVING A HEALTHY SKIN AND LIFE
I have always held so close to my heart a saying that goes; "we are what we eat."
After carefully going through a phase in my life that I am going to share, I affirm that it is nothing but the truth that our food choices impact our well-being and also play a significant role in our physical and mental health.
Taking care of the skin goes beyond topical treatments or expensive skin care products.
This is not to cancel off-the-shelf skin care products wellness products or supplements that tackle all sorts of skin issues. These are also helpful.
Going by my personal experience.
At a point in my life, I wanted to shed some weight and keep fit.
Bear in mind that I wasn't thinking of anything related to my skin. My focus was just on losing some unwanted weight.
I know how important exercises are and how they improve physical and mental health and also keep you in good shape.
I did some research and I found out I can't rely only on exercises(which are very helpful)but needed to fix my diet and ration what goes into my stomach.
I knew it was time to start practising moderation, ditch some unhealthy foods( like processed foods, and fizzy/carbonated drinks that are high in sugar that I got to know about in the course of my research)completely, stick to portion control and go with what's sustainable for me. I avoided an overly restrictive diet too. It's weight loss and not a death sentence.
I started by incorporating healthy fruits that were accessible in my area into my diet.
I ate fruits that are low in calories like berries, cucumber, watermelon and kiwi. I learned that they are high in antioxidants and are great for achieving healthy skin.
I also read that antioxidants help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals and can help reduce inflammation.
I would eat portioned foods twice a day and have just fruits for dinner. I did that for a week.
The following week, I would eat one cooked healthy meal and snack on fruits that are diet-compliant later in the evening with simple but effective exercises.
I also took staying hydrated seriously.
I would drink a lot of water as my life depended on it. I had to set an alarm to alert me when it was time to drink water.
I ate foods rich in fibre that helped me feel full so I wouldn't relapse.
Three weeks into doing all of these things, I started noticing a clearer skin.
My face which used to be a haven for acne, blackheads and hyperpigmentation started getting better. It looked so unreal. I had to keep observing.
In six weeks, I couldn't believe what was happening to my skin.
It was becoming dewy and smooth.
I also had people asking who my skincare plug was.
It was then I realised there's so much more eating healthy can do to your body and your skin.
I wanted to only lose weight but I ended up having beautiful skin as a plus.
Amazing right? Yes. It is.
This could be you too.
One thing I have learned from all of these is that eating healthy does not only prevent or eliminate certain diseases, it plays a huge and pivotal role in what becomes of our skin.
I am a living testimony.
I hope we all embrace wellness in its entirety and join the train of healthy eaters.
