Hiking For 2.665 Metres Above Sea Level; Papandayan, West Java

Hello, traveller in the world... It's been a long time since I climbed a mountain. But a while ago, I had the opportunity to visit Mount Papandayan in Garut, West Java. In the past, this mountain was indeed famous among climbers, not only because of its excellent nature, but also because of its friendly tracks. I went here with some of my friends who were very curious about what it was like to climb. I also chose Papandayan, again yes because the track is very easy. Especially now that Papandayan is managed by local residents as a tourist spot, which means, the climbing track is made easier, making motorbike lanes to the top. For some climbers, apart from reducing the essence of a mountain, it is also a little annoying because they have to race with motorbikes along the track.

I departed from Jakarta in the evening, then got there in the morning, we showered, had breakfast to recharge our energy and did registration. From the parking area, the smoke from the crater was already beautiful. The smell of sulphur also spread throughout the Papandayan area.

We started climbing at around 9am. The air was cool, the sky was clear and there was no sign of rain in the near future, but when looking at the weather app, it turned out that there was a possibility of rain in the afternoon to evening.
Papandayan's beautiful nature is dominated by rock terrain, while the forest area is more heterogeneous. I don't know what kind of trees dominate here, but some I know as cantigi.

To be honest, this Papandayan hiking track is very beginner-friendly. In fact, I saw many visitors who were not hikers, but tourists who just wanted to walk to the dead forest area.

There are some very interesting views in Papandayan: the crater area (unfortunately, when we visited, this area was not allowed to be visited), the dead forest area, and another edelweiss field. The journey we will do is approximately 15kilometres back and forth. So all day, we will cover that distance in the midst of beautiful nature and have fun.

There were no significant obstacles during the hike. But certainly, my longing for this one natural activity was a little relieved. Maybe next time I should show another cool climb, there are still many mountains in Indonesia that must be shown to people because they are so beautiful.

My friends and I relaxed for a while in the iconic dead forest area. This is indeed a favourite photo spot for visitors. This area is very wide, and the right side is limited by a wooden fence because underneath is a ravine that directly plunges into a hot crater. I knew about this place from one of my writing friends, Ari. He said that the temperature here can really drop during the dry season, but because when I visited it was the rainy season, it turned out that this area was not too cold. I also only wore one layer of clothes.

After the forest area died out, we were on our way to PONDOK SALADAH. There are many Edelweiss trees here, unfortunately, there were no flowers blooming when I went there.
After arriving at the campsite area, the rain fell from a light sprinkle to a heavy downpour. We were travelling back home, so the road we travelled on was a bit different from when we set off. If when leaving the road is more dominant stones and steps, for the return track there are more areas of soil and roots, but there are still stone areas, just not many.

By late afternoon, the rain was getting heavier and the fog was thickening. Visibility was only about half a metre. Fortunately, we were already home. That night we immediately rushed back to Jakarta. Thank you for reading my journey this time. See you on the next hike.
