Gedhe Kauman Mosque

IMG_20250427_145235.jpg

As a region whose territory is absolutely led by the sultanate, Yogyakarta almost never fails to collaborate many aspects with culture. In terms of tourist attractions, culinary, even many buildings, especially those that have been built for a long time, such as a legendary mosque located on Jalan Kauman Alun-Alun Yogyakarta.

I visited this place when it coincided with Friday when it was approaching the time for the Dhuhur prayer. This means that to access my Dhuhur prayer, I had to wait until the male congregation had finished performing the obligatory Friday prayer once a week.

After waiting for about an hour, we, the female congregation, began to enter the mosque to perform the Dhuhur prayer. You can see from the front before entering, this mosque is surrounded by a white concrete fence.

In the middle is the access to the main building, at the top it is a gray semicircle with decorative ornaments in the form of two wings in the middle of which there is a clock indicating the time. At the top there is a sign of the moon and stars which are symbols of Muslims.

In addition to the main door, on the left and right there are also small doors with dark green gates and gold wing carvings similar to those in the main part.

In the inner area, in the courtyard of the mosque, there is a clear pool that surrounds the mosque area. It is located right after the concrete fence that I mentioned above.

As for the floor, everything is neatly covered with tiles. There are pots of plants that make this area feel even fresher. After going around to the back, it turns out that this tiled floor is indeed used throughout the outer area of the mosque.

I headed to the ablution area which is at the very back of the building. For female worshipers, it is on the left side, while for male worshipers, it is on the right side.

I headed to the left wing and found an ablution area that I thought had been updated. Why did I conclude that? Because in addition to the building of the ablution area looking new, so is the design of the taps and water gutters underneath. Everything is exactly like the designs of more recent mosques.

If you ask, what was the design of the ablution area for the old mosque like? Usually, it is a large and spacious pool without a fountain or tap. However, this model is rarely used considering its efficiency.

At the front or terrace, of course it is semi-open with eight strong pillars supporting the middle of this area. The pillars are made of very sturdy teak wood material, along with beautiful carvings. The pillars are painted in off-white, green and a little gold pattern.

As for the roof, can you see the details of the wood that is framed from the outside meeting at the center point supported by the eight pillars? This area is dominated by the same color: white.

In contrast to the main part, or prayer room, which is all dominated by wood-colored paint. The design of the roof is exactly the same as the terrace area, only the color is different. However, what you need to know is, the logs wood that are the pillars, these are whole logs that are specifically designed to support the main area of the prayer room at the Gede Kauman Mosque, Yogyakarta.

The antique-designed hanging lamps make this mosque even more beautiful and attractive.

However, I forgot to show you the pattern of the tiles for the terrace area. These are tiles with a beautiful interlocking motif and a very ‘antique’ feel.

What do you think? If you go to Yogyakarta, will you visit and stop by to see the architecture of this legendary Gede Mosque?

Thank you for reading my review. See you next time.

These sacred places are beautiful because of their architecture and design, the combination of colors and the respect that people have for these places.

I like the door frames, and the area where the ceiling is dark and the carpets are red. Thanks to your publication I learned a new word ablution. @titisnariyah

Ah... glad to hear you learned a new word. It's a mandatory ritual before praying, by washing certain parts of the body. I also like dark colors like maroon or dark chocolate. It gives an elegant calm impression, doesn't it? Thanks for stopping by.

Yes, that's exactly the feeling the colors convey.

About the ablution, I imagine that they wash the hands or, failing that, the feet.

Or is there another part of the body that they wash before praying? 😬 @titisnariyah

You captured the beauty and the peaceful atmosphere of the Gedhe Kauman Mosque so well. I loved learning about the ablution area too, it's fascinating how traditions are preserved even as designs modernize.
