Beauty is Wounds is the New Standard

Talking about society and culture today seems incredibly difficult to reconcile with a nation's identity. I feel like my country's culture is increasingly drifting away from its original identity. We've begun to experience acculturation, especially since technology has become a common way for many people to understand things. Many values have shifted.

Social media, like a double-edged sword, has given rise to new standards, ranging from the reasonable to the irrational. While women in our country may have struggled with what age and marriage thresholds were considered "normal," now many more standards are gradually becoming a disease for society, especially women who are most affected.

The most irrational are the widespread beauty standards, like an endemic "epidemic." We women seem to be competing to be white to fit into the beauty standard, while in our country, the natural skin color of citizens is tan or yellow, and some are black in certain ethnicities. The white standard, however, is influenced by East Asian culture and has been blindly adopted by society. White, long, straight hair, flawless, glowing skin, and a small, aquiline nose. That's the true definition of beauty according to today's societal standards.

People compete to undergo beauty treatments, from the natural to those that can cause or have negative effects on the body. Many serious illnesses are caused by certain vitamin injections to achieve fairer skin.

Then there's the issue of slimness. Instead of focusing on ideals and health, women seem to need to be slim and thin quickly and instantly, justifying any means, even going on extreme diets without expert review. These things are increasingly unreasonable in my opinion.

For me, beauty is varied and not limited to one standard. The same goes for slimness and small stature, hair, and other facial features. Diversity is like a new allergy in my country. We activists and those who still care about diversity try to stay on track and continue to remind society of our nation's identity and culture.

Perhaps these are just a few of the standards that are starting to irritate my heart and conscience. I hope people will become more aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle over trying to achieve a "perfect" life through unreasonable means.

Thank you for reading my post. I hope you'll look forward to the next one. Bye...
