Public interest in museums and art exhibitions is on the rise, which is great news because I can finally enjoy lots of exhibitions, both private and free to the public. Nowadays, many cafes double as galleries, such as the one I visited the other day in the M. block area.

It is one of the exhibitions that can be enjoyed for free without paying an entrance fee. However, there was another exhibition I visited, which was a curated event from the Basoeki Abdullah Art Award #5 competition. This award is a prestigious competition for craft and visual artists.

In his introductory remarks, curator Mikke Susanto said that the theme of this year's BAAA is Conversation With NOthings, in which artists will produce works about conversations with things around them on many topics: mental health and human alienation, migration, AI technology, waste, nature, urbanisation, cultural, political and legal preservation, and even conversations about colour. And from the thousands of proposals submitted, these are the works that made it through the curation process.

Upon entering the room, you will be greeted by Tempa's work in the form of a row of small mugs tightly closed and containing various things inside, such as citronella, jasmine essential oil, Bulgarian rose, palma rossa and others. Tempa wants to show the approach in his work through visual, olfactory and auditory stimuli to piece together information.

  • ANIMATION BOARD

There is also an animation work whose raw material consists of a large number of cheerful and lively transition images. These images are then incorporated into transition and animation videos, which are very beautiful and clever.

  • KEROKAN

The next unique work is titled KEROKAN. Kerokan is a traditional technique used by people when their bodies feel sore and heavy. Although this technique is not medically recognised, some medical technicians allow people to use this method, which involves scratching the outer skin with a coin that has been coated with warm oil. This work by Angela Sunaryo was chosen as the winner.

Kerokan is a performance art in the form of a video of people performing the kerokan technique accompanied by the sounds of traditional gamelan instruments.According to Angela, kerokan is a metaphor for social and emotional isolation. Every pain left by the coin scratching the skin represents the pain of isolation, the sharp edge between acceptance and rejection. How profound!

  • A DAMAGED SEAI

forgot the title of this work, but it is clearly a sad depiction of the seas in my country. Due to human greed, the seas have been filled in and turned into tourist attractions, while in other places they have been destroyed to make way for mining. Not only the forests, but also the seas are crying in my country.

That's just part of it, there's more that I'll write about in the next chapter. There are still many interesting things to discuss. Please stay tuned! thank you for reading and have a great day everyone.
