The Challenge of Homer's Odyssey - ENG/PT

Right after finishing the reading of Fathers and Sons (which I posted about here recently), I started a joint reading (with my wife: I read aloud for "both of us" and we comment on it) of Homer's Odyssey. This book has been on my list of "must-read" books for many years, but I never felt motivated to attempt it alone because I find its language extremely strange—honestly, in a way that is uncomfortable and even discouraging. However, given the importance I know the book holds and the insistence of my dear wife, I decided to give it a real try this time.

It's still too early to state anything definitively, but what I can say is that the reading is genuinely challenging! The entire story is told in verses, almost like a recitation (which is factual; it was "architected" in an era when books weren't even written in this manner yet). That is, Homer (and other interpreters, I imagine) memorized and declaimed the entire poem! Which is simply mind-blowing! Pick any random page and try to read it fluently... It's impossible! Not only do the complex words demand time for rationalizing what they mean, but the construction of the text—the manner of its flow—is entirely convoluted, making it simply impossible to read smoothly.

It might seem like I've only been pointing out flaws so far, and that's because it has indeed been very complex, but I am far from giving up on the book because of it! We read a bit almost every night, and the process continues. I don't know if I'll end up considering it as essential and extraordinary as people claim it to be, but what I do know is that I will have completed this reading with calmness and care for my portfolio.

Logo que finalizei a leitura de Pais e Filhos (que postei há pouco tempo por aqui) eu comecei a leitura conjunta (junto a minha esposa: vou lendo em voz alta para "nós dois" e comentando) de Odisseia de Homero, livro que já estava na lista de leituras "obrigatórias" há muitos anos e eu não me animava a tentar sozinho porque considero extremamente estranho pela sua linguagem, de um jeito sinceramente desconfortável e desestimulante até mesmo. Mas dada a importância que sei que o livro tem e a insistência de minha querida mulher, eu resolvi tentar "de verdade" dessa vez.

Ainda é cedo pra poder afirmar qualquer coisa, mas o que posso dizer é que a leitura é realmente desafiadora! A história toda é contada em versos como que declamada (o que é fato, ela foi "arquitetada" numa época que nem se escreviam livros dessa forma ainda), ou seja, Homero (e outros interpretes, eu imagino) decoravam e declamavam o poema inteiro! O que é simplesmente um absurdo! Pegue uma página aleatória e tente ler de maneira fluída... É impossível! Não só as palavras complexas exigem um tempo para uma racionalização do que estão querendo dizer como também a construção do texto o modo da fluidez dele é toda entruncada então é simplesmente impossível ler de forma fluida.

Pode parecer que só estou colocando defeitos até então, isso se dá porque de fato tem sido muito complexo, mas longe de mim desistir do livro por causa disso! Quase toda noite lemos um pedaço e a coisa vai acontecendo, eu não sei se vou chegar a considerá-lo tão indispensável e absurdo quanto as pessoas o consideram, mas o que sei é que vou ter essa leitura feita com calma e carinho em meu portifólio.

Nas fotos, capa e trecho do livro na edição brasileira que tenho em mãos, que minha esposa ganhou de aniversário de seu irmão.
