If I were to learn a new language

I am a Nigerian. I understand my mother tongue language, I understand and can speak the English language, and that is all. Among the three major languages in Nigeria, I can understand the Igbo language when it is spoken on a lighter note, but I do not understand the Hausa or Yoruba languages. However, I would like to learn how to speak the Yoruba language.

I could have opted to learn one of the major languages in the world such as French or German, but no, I want to learn the Yoruba language. This language is widely used in Nigeria, and sometimes it makes one feel that if a person does not know how to speak it, then the person is not fully Nigerian.

I have been to Lagos three times, one of the most popular Yoruba-speaking states. Although English is meant to be used as a major means of communication there, considering the fact that Lagos State is more like the centre of attraction in Nigeria, the Yoruba language is still widely used. Most of the citizens believe that everyone in Lagos must understand the language.

Also, the Yoruba language is heavily used in Nigerian music and movies. Most of the biggest Nigerian music albums today have a bit of Yoruba in them. Movies are not left out as well. This is to show how broad and influential the Yoruba language is.

There was a time when I used to frown at an artist whom I love because of the way he does his things, but he usually sings in the Yoruba language. That pained me a lot because I could not understand anything in his lyrics.

I have not tried to take learning this language seriously because I am very tough when it comes to learning new languages. I do not assimilate easily. Also, even living among people who speak a particular language can be difficult for me. It is so tough!

Maybe if I get my mind settled and relaxed, I can go for it. But for now, I have other more pressing needs that require my mind and head to settle.
