Carmelo Hayes Deserved Better in His WWE Debut

Did you see Carmelo Hayes’ first appearance on SmackDown? I was totally stoked for that! But man, it didn’t go the way I expected.

So he went up against Cody Rhodes and honestly, he put up a really good fight. Then out of nowhere, Cody just wins. Carmelo took the L.

I mean don’t get me wrong, Cody Rhodes is a legend. There’s no doubt about that. But this kid Carmelo Hayes is fresh blood you know? He’s got so much potential and I wanted them to let him shine on his first night.

Yeah, Carmelo didn’t win, but that’s not the point. It’s how you lose. Pinning clean in your first match on the main roster? That’s not exactly making a splash.

While watching an interview with veteran journalist Bill Apter, he said Triple H and the creative team dropped the ball on this one. And you know what? I couldn’t agree more.

Only 29 years old and already making waves in NXT. So why not let him do the same on the main roster? I don’t understand it.

I’m not saying Carmelo had to win or anything. I know Cody Rhodes is a big deal and you have to make him look strong. But there’s making him look good and then there’s making everybody else look bad, which is what this match did to Carmelo.

They could have at least let him put up a fight. You know, maybe have him come close to winning a couple of times. That way it would have been more believable that he had a shot — so when he still lost it wouldn’t feel like such a disappointment.

But what can you do? It might just be that this is the start for Carmelo Hayes. Big plans could be in store for him from Triple H and the creative team, and this defeat may just be a blip on the radar.

I really do hope so because Carmelo Hayes is legit. He isn’t getting nearly enough credit for his work on SmackDown Live, and that needs to change immediately. Come on WWE, let’s see it done right with Carmelo. Don’t let such a talented kid like him fall through the cracks. Give this young man an opportunity to show everyone what he can really do out there in that ring!
