The Bible Says "You are gods" 📖 From Jesus, Quoting Psalms
I want to present an idea of what it means to be "gods" in the following verse.
John 10:34 (in context below)
31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?" 33 The Jews answered him, "It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God." 34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came — and Scripture cannot be broken — 36 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." 39 Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.
He was quoting from Psalm 82 when they accused him of claiming to be the son of God.
I am sure this topic is in one more place in the scriptures because I ran into it while reading the Tanakh and as he said, "Is it not written in your Law...?" which is the Tanakh (Torah, Nebeyim, and Ketuvim), meaning the law, the prophets and (other) writings. This all came to mind as little things that bother us sometimes do.
I'm not saying that I know what this means for sure, but God has a plan and every word matters in the bible. We are compared to God by God himself as in my Hebrew post from the beginning Exodus 7.
And the Lord said to Moses, "See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet."
So that is what I am addressing in this post. There were two examples that came to me, where we are "like God" in the roles we play and the way we use our words.
Fathers
As parents we are in charge of our children, sometimes the children may be a small multitude. Other times it's just one or two. When they are babies and toddlers, we are everything to them and they have to listen to us and do as we say. As the children grow, they start to do more of what they want to do and there is a struggle. When they reach adulthood, they are advised by the father to do x, y, and z in order to be successful or to get their education finished and of course advice on jobs.
They can do what they want and my job as a father is to allow them to choose to do what I say or to go their own way and do certain things their way and, and thus, make many of the same mistakes that I made as a young man. My goal in advising them was to help them leap past stupid mistakes and their consequences. They seem to resent me for that loving and caring wise counsel.
The reason I give them a certain pieces of advice is to save them the pain, agony, or on larger decisions, a permanent change in where their life is going compared to where it had been leading. In other words, a life changing consequence. I'm not trying to get them to do something for me, but my intention on advising them was to get them to do something that would save them from the pitfalls that I fell into when I was young. If I offered them a head start to get a business going it would save them from having to work and save before starting it, and they would gleefully accept that jump ahead in life. But advice? Not so much.
God tells us we should do things and many do not comply. He tells us what will happen as the world gets more and more evil. We do not study his word to get a jump on that situation in order to watch for it. He does all of this for the same reason I do the same for my kids, so we can stay healthy and be a kind loving human being. We choose to go our own way at times, as the children sometimes do, and we face the consequences. My job as a father is to allow my kids to go their own way and face to consequences. That, my friend, is very difficult for me to do, but I have to do it so that they can learn (when they side-step my advice). Rebellion of the father's wise counsel is like people's rebellion against God.
As an example, I recently found out the reason for one of God's commands, which I thought to be silly up until recently. We are not supposed to wear clothing that is a mixed weave of linen and cotton. Now, thousands of years later, we find out that each of these materials have a distinctly different health benefit to them. They are each charged with natural energy. One of them has a positive charge and the other a negative charge.
Linen is anti-microbial and cotton is anti-bacterial. One is positively charged and the other is negatively charged. When you wear one or the other, you get the health benefit. When you where a mix, you get neither of the benefits because they cancel each other out. We did not have the ability to analyze the reason until now, as humanity grows to adulthood. But the truth about them was given to us by The Father because he did know all about these facts way back then.
I have always followed the commandments, at least the ones that I thought made sense, but I should have followed even the ones I did not understand. Science is now catching up with what God Said, further proving that everything he said in his word is true and intended to be for our own good.
So as a father, I am like a "little god" for a very small quantity of people called children. I instruct them when they are young and then advise and test them when they're older to see if they will follow my advice. I want to see if they have learned anything afterwards and if so, which path did they choose? Did they take the dad cheat code, bypassing difficulties, or did they try something new with more probability of failure?
When parenting, I tell them what not to do and the reasons why they shouldn't do it. They need not wait four thousand years to find the reason as above. My advice could be in order to avoid legal problems or financial problems. Take insurance for example. They need to have it. If they don't and something goes wrong they can be sued and financially burned for many years.
God Like Power
The other way we can understand "you are gods" is that we are powerful like God, created in his image. What we say matters! Do you think he would not give us a portion of his creative attributes? Side note: Did you know that the words avara k'davora (Abra-kdabra) a simply Hebrew, meaning, "I create as I speak" yet people have turned it into a killing curse as done in Harry Potter movies.
We should be out there healing the sick and raising the dead as his disciples had done. I have not experienced those miracles as one who performs them. I have, however, been healed of certain incurable conditions by the power of prayer, mine or others praying fvor me. My children, at an early age, were able to stop the rain in order to go to the park and play in the sand because they believed what their bible story books said. For that reason, I believe that faith plus words are necessary in order to realize the power in us and in the name of Yeshua.
Also, Jesus said this, eluding to the power of our words as beings made in the image of God.
“But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” (Matthew 5:37)
I think that verse says a lot about people who talk a lot, especially about negative things, because what you say actually brings about changes in the ether, if you will. It is a bit like someone healing another individual by the power of his words and in the name of Yeshua. The universe was created by God's word. He said it and it was created. We don't have that kind of power, but we do have power over what we focus on and focusing thoughts and words on negative situations usually brings more negativity. I am not a proponent of "positive thinking" or "name it and claim it" beliefs that are out there, but I do believe that our faith in a thing, or lack thereof, can influence the results in any project. I'm finding this out in a real way these days.
Science and archaeology continue to come up with facts that confirm the truth and history. The name YHVH is encoded numerically in our DNA - recently discovered. I have a feeling I will have more content soon as I see more and more of @theplan coming out.
He has a plan and he lays it out in his word. I'm glad that plan includes the answer to the question he knew I would have, spoken directly to me in the bible, and personally while in prayerd. It is helping to satisfy the "Why?" questions that I have.
Thanks for reading both this and my @hebrew series. I will also soon have a prophecy blog as well named after the last book of the bible - @hazon. (revelation)
