When a leader has to go: Things to consider

All things in life eventually come to an end, and holding a leadership role in an organization is not an exception.

At some point, sooner or later, a leader will have to leave their organization, either by their own decision or because they are given notice.

Will an organization miss its leader?

One thing is for sure, an influential leader with a positive impact on their organization will always be missed.

In fact, the work, effectiveness, and paradigm of such a leader will be quoted as a benchmark for future performance.

On the other hand, a leader with poor results will be fast forgotten or even mentioned as a cautionary tale.

Will a leader miss their organization?

When the various needs of a leader are met by their organization, there will usually be no reason for a leader to even think of leaving and looking for another organization to be in charge of.

However, if a leader believes that their organization is actually a hostile place to them that also fails to satisfy their needs, that leader will hardly miss their organization, and, in fact, they will feel relieved, if they manage to find an organization that can ensure better working conditions and various rewards for them.

Does a leader have a strong bargaining advantage?

Depending on the actual circumstances and ability of an organization to offer a competitive package to a highly effective leader, and entice them to stay with the organization, a skillful, experienced, and result-driven leader definitely has a powerful bargaining advantage over their current organization, and if this bargaining advantage is acknowledged and honored by their organization, a leader will end up having a better position and role overall.

This bargaining advantage may, or may not, prove to be that strong, when a leader seeks for a new leadership role in another organization, so it may become a double-edged sword.
