First Cantaloupe, Monster Zucchini, and Finally Seeing a Watermelon
The garden is starting to produce some serious melons! I harvested my first ripe cantaloupe and have a couple of others that are probably just a couple of days or so away from being ready! This has been one of my healthiest plants so far and will be growing more next year for sure. This year, I am just trying out what works, what doesn't and what I am going to proceed with next year, as well as what I am not going to continue with. We'll just say, cantaloupe is a winner!
There are six more melons growing on this one plant, and like I said, a couple of them are almost ready to go. I am really getting excited that I am finally seeing some good fruiting action. My strawberries were kind of a bust, and my tomatoes keep getting attacked by bugs and hornworms, so they have been a bit of a bust as well. But my cantaloupe and zucchini have been doing great!
Speaking of zucchini, check out this monster! Seriously, this thing is huge, lol. I am glad I planted just one of these because I can't eat zucchini this fast, lol. At least I know next year when I start trying to produce to sell, this will be one I will be growing for sure! There are a couple of more that aren't quite ready, but hey, I have enough to go around right now, lol. And that's after taking my grandmother some for her to cook, lol.
But, the best little surprise of the morning was when I went to move around some of the watermelon vines and saw my first little watermelon starting to grow! I thought I was never going to see one start up, haha. It was the last plant that went into the garden, and with how late I was in planting it, I am not really shocked that it is taking a while.
My two biggest problems with the garden this year have beem my lack of knowledge and experience, and my severe lack of patience. I am learning a ton though and that is the biggest win yet. I know what I will be planting next year, and that is going to be a bunch of melons, lol. Tomatoes and peppers have been more of a hassle, and the strawberries were starting out fine, then fizzled out into nothing. That was a lack of knowledge thing...
Those are just some hard but valuable lessons. I am just glad now that I am finally starting to see some real results and beginning to pick more than I can eat, at least when it comes to zucchini, haha.
Until next time...
Keep being ungovernable, grow fresh food, and just enjoy your life!

I had two nice size zucchini this year, each one was around 800g. Then there was a bumper growth of 9 on a plant, three were yellow instead of green then started to rot on the ends. Not sure why, but learning every day like you
This one is over 3 pounds, lol. It's freaking huge, lol. I have had a few that started to come up and died off, but I have gotten 6 good sized zucchini at this point. The others are probably near the 600-700 gram level.
It's typical for men to be happy when they see melons. 😂 Isn't it nice to harvest your own fruits and veggies?

I love big juicy melons, 🤣
But yes, it’s awesome producing my own food! Very freeing!
Glad to see the progress on the homestead! You'll be eating good and fresh for a while!
Now to rebuild the chicken flock and kill some hawks, lol
Those are some awesome fruit and veggies! Makes me want to try my hand at it!
It's a learning process for sure, lol.
I love fruits , especially freshly harvested ones, there was a time I went to a little village in the eastern part of my country, they have more than 8 different types of fruits that grows freely there, so I ate fruit day in and out before leaving there.
Nice farm by the way and that's a good harvest
That's awesome! Yeah, I am figuring out what works and what doesn't, haha. Seems like cantaloupe and zucchini have been winners so far, the rest has been a bit of a frustrating and expensive learning experience, haha.
