What's in a Name?
Hey everyone,
I was reading a post by @ecoinstant the other day where he joked about his shocking discovery that @buttcoins isn't, in fact, that person's legal name. We all knew that, of course, but it was a funny moment that got me thinking about all the creative and unique usernames we see across Hive every day and the stories behind them.
I've seen some incredibly creative names, and I'm genuinely curious if anyone would like to share the origin of theirs.
To get the ball rolling, I'll share my own. Mine is simple enough: TheCrazyGM.
I chose the "GM" part when a lot of people online were using "DM" (Dungeon Master) specifically. I wanted to stand out a bit, as I play and run many different tabletop RPGs and genres—from sci-fi and horror to modern and fantasy—not just Dungeons and Dragons. "GM" for Game Master just felt more inclusive of everything I enjoy.
And the "Crazy" part? Well, let's just say people like me who spend this much time and energy creating entire worlds and dozens of characters from scratch are probably not 100% stable. ;) It’s a little nod to the chaotic passion that goes into the hobby.
This also brings up another question. Were you lucky enough to snag your name on all the other sites you use, or is it a Hive-specific identity? I've been fortunate enough to secure TheCrazyGM
on pretty much every platform I've ever tried to use, which has been great for building a consistent online presence.
So now, I'd like to ask everyone else: What's the story behind your name?
Is it an old handle you've had for years? A clever pun? A reference to a favorite character or a private joke? And have you been able to carry that name across the internet, or is it special to your time here on Hive?
Drop a comment below and share your story. I'd love to hear them!
As always,
Michael Garcia a.k.a. TheCrazyGM
I spent 6 years in post production hell trying to release my first short series of simple ecological education.
At least I can say, it did eventually drop:
EcoInstant is supposed to be short for Ecological Instant or, Instante Ecológico.
Back in 2016 when I was first learning about crypto. I was having a meet up with a few friends.
I said a passing comment like, crypto feels like it’s pulling money out of your ass. We all had a laugh about our Buttcoins joke. After we met I created a group chat and called it the Buttcoins Club.
Then about 6 months later I found Steem. As I explored Steem I had a feeling that the place seemed very serious. I decided I wanted to join Steem and bring some funny and silliness through my profile. So I called myself Buttcoins. And so it goes…..
Mine is a shortened version of my surname Obaseki.
Been a mixname since my middle school and still a nickname now.
Came on hive and apparently there was a Seki (probably an alt account or something)
But seki1 was available... I kind of like it..
Seki the first... Seki1.
TheCrazyGM is brilliant!
My Hive name is simply my first and second names smashed together, Tydyn Rain. Since my name is unique in the world (as far as I know), I've been able to secure and use the same username across every blockchain and platform where I have a presence, so if you see it somewhere, it's always me (with the exception of a Facebook account that was created by a former co-worker to parody me - my own Facebook account got deleted several years ago). I've pretty much always used this name, so for many, many years now. I find the names that people choose fascinating. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
Well, in my case, my username isn’t new—many people at work call me this: '@neuropoeta'... I'm a neurologist and also a writer in Cuba with a serious addiction to poetry... On Hive, I don’t think I could’ve picked a better name 🤭🤭
