Venus De Milo Art Round / Re-blog lottery

I recall my first visit to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. It was the summer of 1999 on a rather hot day and I was glad to escape the heat after entering the museum (the line was incredibly long!) Once inside I was amazed by just how big the museum truly is! It would take days to really see most of it, so my girlfriend and I decided to spend two days there and prioritize certain areas to explore.

Of course you have to see the Mona Lisa which is a remarkably small painting. For all of it's fame one would think it was larger. The collection and range of artists was outstanding. The Egyptian, Greek, and Roman collections were amazing. I remember just being in awe at the age of some of the ancient sculptures housed there. One of the most memorable ones was the Venus De Milo, just an amazing work of art. It's also the one pertinent to my post today!

The sculpture of Venus De Milo was discovered on the island of Milos, Greece in 1820 by a farmer working his fields. The French king Louis XVIII bought the statue and it has been housed in the Louvre since that time. It's believed that the sculpture was meant to be the goddess Aphrodite and was found with one hand holding an apple which sadly has long since been lost. It was sculpted most likely around 100 BC, over 2,100 years ago!

The art round I'm sharing today is of the Venus De Milo and is a true work of art. It was made by the Franklin Mint in Pennsylvania, US in 1973 as a special collection on the treasures of the Louvre Museum. This is the only one of the collection that I own and found it in a private jewelry shop in Long Beach, California over ten years ago now.

Precious metals don't always come as coins but can be special works of art in rounds, bars, or even hand poured into molds to create unique artwork. When I first saw this I had to buy it because it was just such a beautifully created silver art round. I didn't know anything about it at the time buy it turned out to be a creation of the Franklin Mint, unfortunately they no longer produce art rounds or bars. But they sure did produce some amazing creations back in the 1970's and 1980's.
