Silver Gold Stackers Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 1

The Silver Gold Stackers Twelve Days of Christmas event has started for Christmas 2025! It was started by @silverd510 some six years ago, here you can share twelve items you would like to receive for Christmas. It does have to be precious metal related. It can also be a way to let your "Secret Santa" know what you might like. Every year the Silver Gold Stackers have a gift exchanging program where you can be a Secret Santa and send some silver to another participating member. It can be a lot of fun, sadly this year I'm not participating. The budget has just gotten too tight!

I've never hidden the fact that I am a huge fan of Mexican silver and gold coins. I really started to collect them seriously when I lived along the border with Mexico in Arizona. Prices on Mexican precious metals were much lower there as there was an abundance of them. Plus, at the time, silver and gold prices were much, much lower than today. So I bought as many as I could afford back in those days!

I still like to pick up Mexican silver, although it has become much more expensive and popular among collectors. One item I would love to get for Christmas this year would be a two Troy ounce silver proof Libertad from 2024. They are beautiful artistry on precious metals! I have to admit I like the older design better, but it is what it is... I went on eBay and found some nice pictures of the silver masterpiece, have a look:

About the coin:

From numista.com

One interesting fact about the Libertad is that they do not come with a face value or denomination on the silver/gold. Technically, that makes them silver rounds rather than coins. The reason the Mexican government chooses to do this is that they are bullion and the value is dependent on the value of the silver or gold in each round.

This proof silver Libertad from 2004 is a heavy two Troy ounces of silver. They do come in smaller sizes as well, as well as larger. But two ounces is nice and hefty! 6,100 were minted last year and the current silver value in the round is $95.71. The premium by most collectors runs about $50 over that so this would run around $150 range more or less at the moment. Not too bad for a beautiful silver work of art!

Mexican Libertad Bullion

Gold initial design, from eBay.com

Mexico began producing bullion gold Libertad rounds in 1981, and then the following year they started up the silver ones as well. The gold was produced in three sizes: 1/4th ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce. In 1991 they expanded into production of 1/20th once and 1/10th an ounce as well. Even with a modest investment most people were able to invest in the smaller gold.

Original silver Libertad design, from eBay.com

The silver Libertad was only available in one Troy ounce from 1982 until 1990. Then in 1991 the Mexican Mint expanded production to offer 1/20th ounce, 1/10th ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, in addition to the one ounce version. In 1996 the began offering 2 and 5 Troy ounces as well. This made them affordable for just about everyone!

If you are looking to invest in silver or gold, the Mexican Libertad is a great place to start. Just keep your eyes open for good deals and always shop reputable sources. There are unscrupulous people trying to pass off fake silver and gold to the those new to precious metals. Many fakes have been coming out of China for several years now, so always be a smart shopper!

That will wrap up my first day of the Twelve Days of Christmas run by the Silver Gold Stackers community. I do hope you liked the silver proof Libertad, it sure is pretty! Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below, and thank you so much for all of your support. It really is greatly appreciated. Have a great Wednesday everyone!

You can’t go wrong with any Libertad or Onza. But I like most Mexican silver and gold.

They're expensive aren't they? Silver is still sitting at $48 and ounce...

I think it has to be at least one ounce of silver, but most people send quite a bit more along with some Christmas goodie!
