Silver Frigatebird Coin from the Beautiful British Virgin Islands

avatar

Monday again, it just keeps coming around! I had a nice weekend so I really complain, and today I do have some work to get done. But for once not an overly busy schedule! So with any luck the rest of the day will go well. I really hadn't thought of topics to share today, but since I have been on a bird coin run lately, I decided to keep the streak alive.

Today I have a really pretty silver coin from the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Some of my favorite islands in the Caribbean! I don't recall when I bought this coin, but it was many long years ago. Best of all, it's a another bird coin! I'm a sucker for animal coins and tend to buy them when I find a good deal. This one features an interesting tropical bird, the frigatebird!

About the coin:

From numista.com

This was produced by the Franklin Mint in Pennsylvania for the British Virgin Islands. They did a great job just as they always did when they produced coins. It's sterling silver at 92.5% and has a bullion value of $33.34 as of the time of writing this post. This coin carries a collector's premium though, and I expect it would sell for in excess of $50 these days.

I also like the young portrait of Queen Elizabeth on this one, they did a great job! The birds are also done exquisitely and very well designed. This is a coin that will be staying in my collection, and I'm sure I've made a profit over what I paid. Although I honestly don't remember how much it was when I found it.

Since it's an animal coin, I'll share a bit about the star of the show, the frigatebird.

These birds can be found in tropical areas around the world and can soar for weeks at a time. Typically they will be in flight in the day and rest on trees or cliffs at night. The male has a large inflatable pouch on it's neck that is used to attract females during mating season. It sure does look funky when it's inflated like that!

They are also noted thieves when it comes to food, and will steal another birds meal given the chance. It's always entertaining to watch them try and steal food! But mostly they hunt squid and smaller fish on the open ocean. I recall seeing may of these when I lived in the Caribbean, especially when we were out diving. They are a very cool bird!

That will wrap up my post for this Monday, I hope you enjoyed the coin and learning a little more about the frigatebird. Do any of you have them where you live? I know a lot of you Hiveans live in more tropical locations. Please feel free to ask any questions or leave any comments below. Thank you for all of your support, it's deeply appreciated. Have a great week!

Mother nature at her finest I suppose! Then again what do female peacocks like about the male tail feather display? Who knows?

Glad you liked it, the Franklin Mint was an awesome silver producer!

No frigate this time around! Although I still have a few of the Sunken Treasure series for the British Virgin Islands to share, but I think I'll make them more treasure hunting related. The frigatebird is interesting, down in the tropics you'll see them near docks at times trying to steal other birds fish.

I saw an article the other day about a diver that just found some treasure, I didn't read the story though. I feel like a lot of those headlines are often a couple years late.

Actually, I don't think I own any coins from Indonesia to be honest. I've collected coins from the Caribbean since I lived there back in the 90's!
