Playboy Hotel & Casino one dollar chip/ Re-blog lottery

When I used to live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania there were many weekends I would head for Atlantic City, New Jersey with my friends. It's not exactly Las Vegas but there are a lot of hotels/casinos that have been in operation since legalized gambling was approved by New Jersey voters in 1976. It has great beaches and a boardwalk with shops at the beach front, it's a lot of fun in the summer!

An interesting piece of history of Atlantic City is that from the years 1981 until 1984 the Playboy Enterprises operated their own casino there by the name of Playboy Hotel & Casino. The project had problems from the start. Obtaining a gaming license and funding forced them to partner with the Elsinore Corporation who ran a hotel/casino in Las Vegas. They were given a temporary provisional gaming license from the New Jersey Gaming Board and were able to operate until 1984. At that point a gaming license was granted to Elsinore but not to Playboy over concerns about Playboys London casino operations, forcing Playboy to sell it's shares to Elsinore. The name was quickly changed to the Atlantis and operated until 1989.

And now is where it gets bizarre... Donald Trump then bought it and made it the Trump Regency. But in 1992 the bank holding the mortgage took possession of the casino until Trump bought it back in 1995 and changed the name again to Trump's World Fair in 1996. It then closed down for good in 1999 since it wasn't profitable and was demolished the following year.

But this is an interesting piece of casino history from Atlantic City, NJ:

About the token:
Location: USA
Mint: Green Duck Corporation (per Numista, however other sources state they went out of business in 1962, so mint is really questionable)
Year: Between 1981-1984
Denomination: One Dollar casino play value
Composition: copper/nickel
Weight: 22.5 grams
Diameter: 37.2 mm
Thickness: 2.55 mm
Obverse: Big $1 with lettering: PLAYBOY HOTEL & CASINO 1gd ATLANTIC CITY ACCEPTABLE ONLY AT PLAYBOY ONE DOLLAR TOKEN NOT LEGAL TENDER
Reverse: Playboy bunny head and TM

Although it isn't silver which would have been cool, I got it for free when I purchased some coins in a coin shop in Long Beach so I can't complain! It seems to have gotten a lot of use in casino play as it's scratched up quite a bit. But it's just a very interesting part of the history of both Atlantic City and Playboy Enterprises. Then at the end you even get some Donald Trump in the story....

But definitely not an item that any stacker will likely want to collect since it isn't silver, but for a casino chip collectors it's pretty cool!

flickr.com
Playboy Hotel and Casino right along the boardwalk and the beach front

As you can see the hotel/casino had a beautiful location on the beach front and the boardwalk. It's a shame they couldn't succeed but I guess the moral to the story is to always make sure you have connections in the gaming board before building a casino anywhere. You really live at the mercy of the gaming board and can deny the license or revoke it at any time they see fit and you are instantly out of the casino business.

Makes me glad I didn't choose a career in the casino industry!

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. If you have any questions, suggestion or comments feel free to leave them below. Have a great weekend everyone!

And my disclaimer:
Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Wow! That's a lot of turnover for a casino. I know it's not silver, but that's definitely some cool history you have!

I haven't ever seen many of these, I guess there aren't too many left. That casino must have been cursed because it was a major money loser for all the owners except Playboy. Apparently they were making money then but when they were forced out it all went downhill...

Sounds like the whole thing was cursed after the shenanigans the gaming board pulled on them.

Casinos are a very risky business to be in. You have to advertise constantly to get people to your casino, pay all the employees and the bank loan to build the place. If you can't get enough people in losing their money you can't pay your own bills. It's a very competitive industry, not one I would want to be in!

So very interesting that it went back-and-forth, with Trump being the owner twice if I understand it correctly………..🤔
Life in the casino industry certainly has its share of problems !
Very cool token my friend !🤗

Lots of competition, and you always have to have the best acts, restaurants, and shops. Not something I would ever want to do! Thanks, it's an interesting story more than any real value on the token.

Trump owned it twice, and his corporation that owned it ended up declaring bankruptcy if I recall.

I guess that goes to show you that even the big boys lose money now and then!🙄
It obviously can be a very competitive business to be in nothing I would want to do either !

That's a bit of fun history you have there. Playboy, gosh, I saw a documentary on the Dutch tv and although I wasn't surprised what happened there behind the scenes, it was still shocking to hear those women speak up about it.

Hope you're having a good Saturday!

Old Hugh Hefner sure made a successful brand, I'm not sure all the women were treated all that well sadly....

Nah, although I expected that after all the shit that came to surface over the years, it was still quite shocking how these girls were lured in, to me seeing that in the documentary is the same thing as these sex trafficker organizations. With the only difference for the outside world they were treated like princesses and yes they had a better room probably than these trafficked girls overall who live in dirty circumstances. But in the end it's still traumatizing for these women as well...

Doesn't surprise me at all unfortunately. Sex traffickers under a "respectable" name...

Happens so much so it seems. It's really sad as these powerful people surely have tons of connections who they can blackmail and this way the cycle is endless in these women being stuck there.

sorry for the late reply, I was busy offline and my internet failed on my yesterday!

I had a very productive day in the house though, my back didn't thank me lol.

Look at that, it works again! A productive day is good, too bad your back didn't like it! Doing OK, but I sure do wish I was twenty five again... I get sore so much more easily than I used too! lol

Haha tell me about it. I mean, I'm being so active (at least double steps every day from what I had the last month in the other home to give a comparison) and I already feel wrecked every time I give one room a good cleaning lol. Like, where are the days that I could just pick up the vacuum cleaner and do the whole house without paying for it with backpain the rest of the day :) #oldpeople

I'm lucky that I can barter my way to doing the mopping and boyfriend the vacuuming to spare my back but for how long? I mean eventually he will become more sore too, lol.

Just trying to have a laugh about it helps though. Today we went for a walk during lunchbreak, what a lovely neighbourhood!

How's the weather on your end of the world? It's getting more chilly in the evening here but still ok wearing just a vest instead of a coat.

I know the feeling... At least here it's been nice, going to be about 19 C today here, so should be a nice day! It rarely gets cold in southern California! How's the back holding up?

avatar

That's a good temperature, it's just a degree or so under it here but as soon as the sun is there, it feels like 22/23 degrees Celsius honestly. But it goes both ways, once the sun disappears, it's chilly, lol.

I'm good with the back today, didn't carry as many heavy things as I did yesterday that makes the difference.

Is everything healed on your end or not fully?

Still sore somewhat but I'm not dead quite yet, so I'll take that as a huge plus! Now the old COVID vaccine has taken shot at my left eye, episcleritis... Not a serious condition but it's autoimmune in nature just like everything else since the damn COVID vaccine. May the designers burn in hell...
