Overcoming The Dust Limit...

avatar

For the longest time ever since I've been posting here of Hive I blindly believed that my small votes I made on comments were actually rewarding the vote recipient. Recently I read a post by my friend @dbooster that turned that misconception around a full one hundred and eighty degrees. As it turns out votes on comments that amount to less than $0.02 are never paid out at all, they are in reality turned into dust. What that means is that I have been wasting my votes because they do lower my voting mana but are never paid out.

However, the way I see it, the effort is not completely lost as the person who received the small vote will recognize that I appreciate their effort. I usually respond to almost all comments on my posts anyway because I want the people who take their valuable time and choose to engage my content feel that material is interesting and of some value.

There are a few ways to overcome this issue. Services like Dust Bunny and Dust Sweeper can help to not lose all of that dust. Dust Bunny is a service that allows you to share your Hive Power and in return some of that dust can be saved and converted into votes that surpass the limit. I believe it is prioritized by the amount of HP that you are delegating to the service. I delegate 50 HP to Dust Bunny and see occasional votes.

Dust Sweeper is another service that can help save some of the potential dust. The way it works is you send them liquid Hive and in return they will prioritize either your incoming votes or outcoming votes, or a mix of both depending on your settings. I have used this one as well and it does seem to work but requires sending Hive on a pretty regular basis.

Comment Rewarder

Comment Rewarder is a new service that has been available now for around two weeks. I first became aware of the service when I received an upvote from them, and it was in regards to a comment I had made on an account of a friend. That made very very curious so I began to investigate. It turns out that Comment Rewarder is a service that allows you to make them a beneficiary of part of your post's earnings (minimum amount is 3%.) These funds are used to reward the individuals who have commented on your post and you have upvoted their comment within the first three days of publication. The higher your vote the higher percent they will receive. So now your upvotes on comments won't be wasted and no longer will they be turned into dust!

To use the service all you need to do is go to beneficiaries (on Peakd and Ecency it's under advanced) and put commentrewarder down as a beneficiary with a percent and save. That's all there is to it! You can see below how I did it on the InLeo frontend. I'm giving ten percent back rather than the minimum to say thank you to all of the people who enjoy engaging my published material.

That's will wrap up the first part of my post, I'm also including a link to their information page if you're interested. If you have more questions ask me in the comments section and I'll try to help out.

https://peakd.com/hive/@commentrewarder/introducing-commentrewarder-a-new-service-to-reward-comments

Usually on Wednesday's I have been doing my InLeo premium membership report, but I decided to cut back to twice a month on those and add in some interesting materials in-between. However, I will still share a little silver today like I always do on Wednesdays!

Today as a bonus I'm sharing another one of my Silver Striker tokens. I love collecting these tokens because they are a lot fun and the contain solid silver which is always a great investment. These are commemorative casino tokens that could be won by playing the Silver Striker slot machines in casinos around the world. Like I've mentioned before I haven't seen any of these machines in years so I'm not sure if they're around anymore. But the tokens you can collect still, the cheapest way is usually on eBay.

This particular token I honestly wasn't all that interested in but it came as part of a package deal, and the other tokens were ones that I really liked. I prefer tokens from defunct casinos and Sierra Sid's is still around. This one is a beauty though, it was part of a United States Civil War Guns set they produced back in 2006. Have a look:

About the token

From numista.com

This token is in great condition and contains about 0.65 Troy ounces of silver surrounded by a brass ring. The person on the token is a bit controversial these days because Robert E. Lee was one of the Generals in charge of the Confederate Army during the United States Civil War. His name used to found across the country in military bases but over the past decade they have begun to change things honoring him to new names due to the woke movement.

I'm not going to dive into a history about him today, although he was a very interesting historical figure fighting for the United States in the Mexican American War and taking charge of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. I did include a link to his Wikipedia page if you want to learn more about the man. I just wanted to share this silver beauty, they also have one of Ulysses S. Grant as well, but I don't own that one.

Silver and Gold are great investments right now. With all the instability in the world they are a great way to store wealth as they will always have value. Prices have been rising for both metals as of late and many are predicting gold to top $3,000 an ounce early next year.

I hope you enjoyed my post today and found something interesting and of value. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me along my Hive journey. Yesterday I passed 5K Hive Power which was exciting, but I'll talk more about that in another post. Have a great day everyone!

One question, the first two services are still working, I have not used them for a long time, however this new commentrewarder service seems great to me, in fact in my contests I use them especially on Thursdays.

As for the coins I can not say much, only that I have a silver coin from 1819, my grandfather gave it to me and I still have it.

That's a great family memento, silver coins are some of my favorite things. I've been a coin collector since I was a kid!

The other two services do still work, I'm not sure how effective they are because votes are pretty few and far between. I'm trying to use @commentrewarder on all of my posts now. It's a great way to say thanks!

It’s always nice, stacking, silver, and when you get bonus silver as part of a package deal, that’s even a sweeter deal!👍🤗😊
Sounds like you have an awesome collection of these casino tokens !👍

Over the years I have picked up quite a few. These days they're getting hard to find at good prices though, people are realizing they are rising in value.

So much the better if they become more desirable for your stacking!👍
I wish I had more. I think I have three. 😊

as far as I know, I think the dust issue now has been fix, and we can get any amount that is supposed to be into our account. I forget where did I read about that, and I also could be wrong, since my vote is not big enough, and mostly I spread them out just whenever I want. I think Comment rewarder is another way to fix that.

Apparently it's still a thing, but if I can beat it with this service and share the wealth of my post with my readers it's worth while to me! It's great to help out others here on Hive, especially the newer members!

@acidyo has put a lot of thought and probably time into the new comment rewarder initiative. It seems to be working well. We have had some good discussions about why I still vote even though it will be dust. My hope is I am building a habit and eventually, it will actually be worth something. I actually adjusted my percentages lately to see if I can stay about the threshold and still keep my voting power up.

It must be nice to have enough HP that you can beat the dust limit on comments. I'll get there one of these days! I think @acidyo has come up with a great initiative and it really will help a lot of us out who don't have enough HP to beat that $0.02 limit. I have always voted anyway out of habit as well because I want people to know I appreciate their efforts. I noticed you had bumped up your votes, hopefully you're able to keep the voting mana up and continue those, that's nice of you!

It's looking a little questionable right now. I think I am going to be dropping close to that 80% mark. We will see what happens though. Hopefully as I increase my HP it will get better. Slowly but surely!

One day I will get there too... lol For now I'll take advantage of options not to have those votes turn to dust!

I've been using Dust Sweeper since the Steem days. For the first 20 months my vote was constantly below the 3 cent threshold. The price of Steem and then Hive kept going down even when I swapped tranches of cannabalized Steem into Hive the coin price kept me down until the Crypto Gods rewarded me for my persistence. From then on I very rarely give upvotes under $0.03.

That is my goal too, but since I only have 5K HP it's going to take awhile. I use Dust Bunny and Dust Sweeper as well, but Dust Sweeper I have set to only protect my outgoing votes. I don't see a lot of Dust Bunny votes so I think my delegation is too low to be a priority... lol. I do like the concept of this new one, I'm able to share the wealth on my post which is nice, especially if it's helping out newer members.

20HP is a good enough delegation to them I used to get a lot of sweeping when I was active on inLEO as I barely get votes there. Payout sharing is a good option too. I learned about it in saturdaysavers.

I think Comment Rewarder is one of the best programs in quite some time, you can literally profit share with those who comment! I still have dust bunny and use dust sweeper, but dust sweeper is set to only protect my outgoing votes to other people

Thanks for Sharing this eye opening blog, I've also heard about the comment rewarder, not I haven't took time to know how it works. But reading through your post, I have gotten the information I needed and I will act on it as soon as possible. I also appreciate the info about the dust bunny, I will delegate some as soon as I add up on my Ph... Thanks once more, I really appreciate...

Make sure you get on the Discord server for Dust Bunny, and let the fellow in charge know you have delegated some HP. Otherwise he may not realize it and not start the service

Thanks to a recent power up a 10% vote is above the dust limit. Perfect for comments and the new #snaps
But for Hivers with a lower stake this can be a problem indeed. Adding commentrewarder as a beneficiary can be a solution for that indeed!

I like the program a lot, plus it feels good to share the wealth. I think it's a great solution especially for those who have a very small stake still. I have 5K HP and I'm far from beating the dust limit on comment votes!

It really is a great tool! I'll be using it on all my posts going forward.

DUO is a great token, if you stake more than 200 you get daily Hive dividends and a daily curation on posts as well. If you have questions feel free to ask, I'm on the management team!

You can subscribe to dussweeper or dustbunny so that posts that get vote less than 2cents get paid out.

The only problem I find is it's not all of the votes, and things are prioritized according to how much you delegate. At 50 I seem to be pretty low because I rarely see any votes

I am so not into this stuff I saw that Dust Bunny pop up several times in the past and was thinking Playboy or something.

But hey I learned something on a Saturday morning which is great, gotta read the comment rewarded part again because I did not get the full picture. What I did now was there was a threshold and that is why I tried to stock up on HIVE to make my vote matter !PIZZA

If you look at my votes on comments I will always make sure it is at least 0.02 because of that dust rule. It is also why when low on mana I don't vote comments.
However, I was also led to believe it had been scrapped quite some time ago.
Not sure where I heard that, and so I always keep voting the 2 cents as a miniumum or don't bother.
Comment rewarder...interesting I have never heard of so will go investigate.
I did use one of the dust something services but it seemed sporadic so not done that for ages either!

I've found the others sporadic as well, but apparently they never fixed the dust issue. Apparently this is a way around it! You have a bigger HP stack than I do so I can't routinely vote $0.02 on comments.
