Happy Frankenstein Day!

Happy Frankenstein Day everyone! Yes it is a real holiday that I only found out that existed this morning. Every year, on August 30, it's the celebration of author Mary Shelley's birthday back in 1797 in London, England. Her best known work is by far "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" as one of the earliest science fiction/horror novels ever created published in 1818.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the monster is his name, it's not actually Frankenstein. Scientist Victor Frankenstein creates his monster out of human body parts and manages to bring it to life. So in reality it's Frankenstein's monster or creature. Everyone is terrified of the newly nascent creature who goes into hiding and avoids humans.

At any rate, since I am a member of the Silver Gold Stackers community I found this really cool silver round portraying Frankenstein's monster.

This was made in 2023 by a very high quality private mint called Intaglio. They make some of the very finest silver products on the market today. I don't own this, but after finding it I sure want one! What a cool depiction of Frankenstein!

Over the last century since the early day of Hollywood films Frankenstein has been portrayed in countless films. Some ranging from very serious to insanely funny. I've always preferred the funnier versions myself, not to knock the more serious one's. Many are excellent films! I'll share a few of my favorite over the years.

Young Frankenstein

I've always been a fan of both Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks, and when the two have teamed up they made hilarious movies. Sadly Wilder passed away back in 2016, but Brooks is still with us! In the movie Wilder portrays the grandson of the scientist who created the monster. It was filmed in black and white to feel more like the early Frankenstein movies, but is really funny. Definitely one of my favorite Frankenstein movies!

The Munsters

Although a short lived show, airing from 1964 to 1966, it has influenced artists ever since. Rob Zombie is a huge fan even naming his song "Dragula" after a car used in the series. It was a very funny comedy about friendly monsters living in the real world. Actor Fred Gwynne starred as Herman Munster, a take on Frankenstein. I always enjoyed watching reruns of this show as a kid!

Frankenstein (1931)

Probably the best version of the story ever made starred Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster and Colin Clive as scientist Henry Frankenstein. Once he manages to bring the monster to life the things quickly turn bad. The creature goes on to kill several people including a young girl (an accident.) Soon the town's people are chasing him down with pitch forks and torches.

I haven't seen this one in years, I'll have to make a point to re-watch it if I can find it streaming for free somewhere!
