A Silver Turtle from the Island Paradise of Fiji

Today has been a bit of an odd day. I woke up really early at about four in the morning and just couldn't get back to sleep. I really hate insomnia! But at least I got an early start on some of the projects I've been meaning to get done around the house. The only sad part is the list seems to get longer all the time despite my efforts to conquer them all...

I really didn't have a plan for a post today, and honestly was considering just taking the day off. Then I ran into a travel ad for Fiji online, and reminded me of a coin I had picked up years ago in a coin shop in Phoenix, Arizona. The coin wasn't the most beautiful and had some mileage for sure, but the turtle (I love animal coins) and the mint mark are what sold me on it. I knew that the S could only stand for one mint, San Francisco!

Normally the coins for British protectorates were produced by the Royal Mint. However, in 1942 it was the middle of World War 2 and coin production in Europe wasn't their top priority. So in 1942 and 1943 the coins were produced by the San Francisco Mint, in California. Have a look at at this cool coin:

About the coin:

This coin is 90% silver which is really most of the value in this particular coin. It weighs 2.8 grams, and the price of silver per gram at the moment is just about $1.04. So there is $2.91 worth of silver. But to a collector I might be able to sell it for $7 more or less. It's one I won't be selling though any time soon, I just like the history too much to part with it, and the turtle is pretty cool too!

Fiji

Fiji is an archipelago (or group of islands) of some 330 islands located in the South Pacific. I have always wanted to travel to the South Pacific, but it's one of those places that I have yet to make a visit. I have always loved island living having spent many years in the Caribbean, and Fiji looks beautiful!

The islands were first charted by Captain Cook in 1789 and was a British protectorate until 1970 when they became independent. It is a vacation paradise to people from around the world, and one of those exotic vacation locations that has always appealed to me. The islands and waters remind me a lot of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, just crystal clear water and white sand beaches. I'm sure that sounds perfect for most of the people currently in mid winter in the northern hemisphere!

I've included a couple pictures I found online, and now I am really ready for a trip to Fiji!

Absolutely gorgeous! If that doesn't give you the travel bug I don't know what will... lol

That will wrap up my post for the day. I hope you liked the coin and it's interesting history. It's amazing to think that World War 2 was only 80 years ago, the world has changed a lot since then. Hopefully we won't be seeing a third one anytime soon. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thank you for all of your support, and I hope you all have a great Wednesday!

Very interesting that in 1942 and 1943 these coins were minted by the San Francisco mint!👍
Growing up in Cincinnati, anything with an “S” mint mark was extra special to me!😇
Awesome coin, my friend !😊

That story about the turtle coin is really cool, truly. The history behind that coin during World War II is fascinating. Sometimes, those pieces have a sentimental value that goes beyond the price of silver.

And well, what can I say about Fiji? I have also dreamed of visiting the South Pacific. However, the beaches we have here in Venezuela are just as beautiful as those in Fiji.

You live in the Caribbean essentially, so those beaches are awesome there! Thanks, it's a pretty cool coin! You don't see money from Fiji all that often, it's the first time I had ever found one.

It was an ugly time in history for sure, I hope it doesn't happen again. Thanks, I like the coin. Once of these days maybe I'll make it to Fiji too!

That coin is a great find, especially with the unique turtle design and the San Francisco mint mark. It's fascinating how coins have their own stories and history.

Even though the coin isn't in perfect condition, its history and the fact that it was minted in San Francisco during such a significant period make it a special piece to have in your collection. It's always cool to find coins with a unique backstory and a design that you love, @thebighigg. 🐢💰

Very interesting. I guess by then the US wasn't in the ear yet right, so they weren't too worried about spending the time or resources minting the coins. A very cool piece.

I think we were in the war, since Dec 1941 after Pearl Harbor. Silver wasn't used much in munitions so minting with it was easy, and it probably made the government extra money for the war effort. I'm glad I wasn't involved in that war, it was nasty. Iraq and Afghanistan were minor dustups in comparison!

I couldn't remember when we actually got in. The only dates I remember are like 41 to 45, but I don't know if that was just our involvement or the span of the whole war.

It was an ugly time in the world, hopefully a third round doesn't come around in our lifetimes. It will happen though, I think that's inevitable.

🤔What are the chances of finding buried treasure on that beach? We'd probably find plenty of Turtle eggs for one.

On a beach, not too likely I think. I think pirates would have preferred a cave where it wouldn't get washed away in storm. Except along Florida's treasure coast, there are coins buried in the sand all along there, most are buried by ten feet of sand, so you have to wait for a storm to wash away a lot of the sand on top of them!

I also hate it when I wake up and can't get back to sleep. However I realized that it's either because of an ongoing sickness/inflammation or maybe I just have a lot of thoughts on my mind. I rather prefer to get quality sleep, but over the years it's not been the same.
