A Beautiful Silver Strike Token from Michigan!

I realized that it's been awhile since I shared one of my Silver Strike tokens, so today is the day for another one. The last few days the price of silver had been shooting up to around $36 per Troy ounce. As a collector and stacker of silver and gold that's always very exciting to see as my assets are now more valuable! I've been predicting silver may surpass the $40 mark this year, and it's looking more and more likely.

Back to the token, this particular token I picked up as part of a bundle on eBay at some point. I don't really know a whole lot about the casino, except it is a Native American casino located in Michigan. That something @bozz might know more about than myself. The map shows it's off of Lake Michigan in Traverse Bay. Normally I like to collect tokens from defunct casinos but it appears that this group of resort/casinos are far from ever going out of business any time soon.

Silver Strike tokens could be won by playing the Silver Strike Slot Machines, which are now a dying breed. They used to be everywhere and now only a few small casinos still have them. Wining them from the machines was never a good investment, buying them second hand is the best way to go.

The one thing that I've always like about it is the wolf howling at the moon. Plus it contains just about 0.6 Troy ounces of solid silver surrounded by a brass ring. The way silver prices are going up these are becoming more and more expensive, and there is a pretty big base of collectors out there that only collect these tokens. It's getting hard to find any for less that $30 anymore, most are going $40+.

Gray Wolf

The gray wolf was hunted to near extinction in the United States as ranchers felt they were a danger to their livestock. Fortunately, they have been successfully reintroduced into several areas including Yellowstone National Park, Northern California, and New Mexico. They are slowly making a comeback here in the US.

In Europe and Asia there are large wolf populations, and so these canine predators are at no risk of extinction. Many people are afraid of wolves, but in reality most wolves stay far away from humans. The ones that tend to show up near people tend to have rabies, and should be avoided.

And just an interesting fact, wolves howl to communicate with each other. They don't actually howl at the moon!

Now that we have a successful reintroduction of the wolf in the US, I'm hopeful next we can reintroduce the jaguar as well. These beautiful cats were killed of by ranchers as well, with the last female being killed near the Grand Canyon in the 1940's. They are important to help control deer numbers along with the cougar. They used to roam the entire southern United States at one point, and it would be great to see them repopulated. The also tend to avoid humans and really shouldn't be feared either.

Picking these tokens up secondhand would definitely be a better investment!😊
I would imagine at most casinos the profits are skewed towards the casino, and not the customer!🙄😇

When I used to frequent Las Vegas more I would check out pawn shops off the strip and often they would have a bunch for sale. Now it's all pretty much eBay, but they're just getting too expensive now!

That's pretty cool. I don't think that casino even exists anymore. If it does they have totally rebranded it. The tribe up there has two casinos in the area, with another one in the works. Turtle Creek is just outside of Traverse City in Acme, MI. Leelenau Sands is north of Traverse up the leelenau peninsula in a little village called Peshawbestown (pesh-shaw-be-town).

They may have shut that one down to focus on their new resort facilities. They must do pretty good business if they are expanding like that, but casinos are good business when you don't have a lot of competition!

Yeah, the closest one to them is over in Petoskey I think. They all do pretty well as far as I know. We have a couple within about half hour to forty five minutes of where I live and work.

I had no idea jaguars were ever that far north. North America used to have so many large predators. It will be interesting to see the downstream affect of reintroducing predators back into these habitats. I would imagine more dear being hunted off will have some effect on the vegetation that can grow in those areas, maybe helping other animals to thrive. Also, cool coin!

They used to roam all over the southern states in the US. They really are needed because without predators the deer populations get so high at time that there isn't enough food. Hopefully we'll see their reintroduction, they are beautiful animals!

Yeah, it would be really cool to see a jaguar in the wild ...hopefully a fully fed one that isn't looking for a fresh snack though haha

I grew up in Illinois, and there were always so many deer that it was often a problem with them jumping into traffic and causing some pretty terrible accidents.
