100 Year Old Beautiful Mexican Silver
Back in 2001 I used to travel to Mexico fairly frequently. I had recently moved back to the US from living in the Caribbean for many years and landed in Tucson, Arizona of all places. The nice thing about living there was the proximity to the border, there were times I would go down to Nogales, Mexico with friend just to get dinner. It was a lot fun! Travel to Acapulco and Cancun was fairly inexpensive too, what beautiful places...
Then in 2006 the drug wars started making travel to Mexico hazardous at best, and I haven't been back since. But still a country I love to visit with so many nice people.
While living in Arizona, I used to buy old Mexican silver coins, there were always a lot available and very cheap at the time. Whenever I got a good deal I would buy up as many as I could and have a huge collection of them. Some are nicer than others as most of these coins were heavily circulated and used for many years. But every now and again you can find a diamond in the rough that hasn't been too badly worn like the one I'm sharing today. It's 100 years old and looks pretty much like new with minimal wear and tear!

About the coin:

From numista.com
This beautiful coin was produced in 1925 during the days of the United Mexican States. It's 72% silver and has such a beautiful design with the golden eagle eating the rattle snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus on the obverse (front) of the coin. The reverse (back) has the Liberty cap often used in coins in new democratic nations symbolizing freedom from oppression. I would put this coin at high grade in about uncirculated condition and is probably worth around $50 or maybe a little more. The actual silver content is worth about $3.71 by silver spot prices at the moment, and 1,450,000 were minted.
These are hard to find in good condition as most were very heavily circulated. It's nice to find a gem like this one, and I got a really good deal at the time. Much less than it's worth today, which is why I have always loved to invest in silver coins!
Today I considered diving into the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It's a great celebration remembering your loved one who have passed on, and once I even was even in Mexico City for the event. It was a blast! But I'll save more about that until closer to Halloween...

I know it's kind of a kids show, but did you watch the movie Coco? It was really good and dug into Dia De Los Muertos quite a bit. What a great snag this was for you.
I did see Coco. I thought they did a great job on the Dia de los Muertos, that was a really well done movie! Back in the early 2000's Mexican silver and gold was cheap and I bought a bunch of it. I'm glad I did, it's still stored away with the other stacked items!
Smart man!
Thanks! There was a lot of luck being in the right place at the right time as well! lol
Very nice 1925 Silver centavo's my friend!!👍😀
I haven't ever been to Mexico, I would love to see it sometime, but I've heard the same thing about the drug cartels!!
A friend of mine used to go to Cancun, and he said that if you drive away from a resort, it's dangerous and very depressing......
Mexico used to be a wonderful place to visit, but not anymore. Drug cartels run much of the country and the violence continues... It's pretty much what Colombia was in the 1980's. Now Colombia is a safe country and Mexico is the opposite... It really is sad!
That really is….. I had one neighbor who got stopped at the Mexican border and they wanted a credit card to cross the border Lol🙄
Such corruption…….
2006 is quite a long time, @thebighigg... almost 20 years! Mexico is fun, especially on the west side!
That's a pretty coin, and it looks good, indeed!

I love Mexico @silversaver888 ! I stopped travelling there when I was in the Army, and it was on the list we could not travel. It's just become so dangerous even in the resort areas that it's just not someplace I am all that eager to visit these days.
Thanks, I like the coin too, it was spared the heavy circulation most Mexicans coins have suffered!

Day of the Dead outfits look so cool and l love the made up faces!
Does silver quality vary from country to country?
The silver quality can depending on the status of their mint. The Mexican mint has been around so long that they produce high quality work. It's the oldest mint in the new world! But for the most part the silver quantity and quality is consistent from most countries. But the designs vary from place to place, Mexico is known for great designs!
Ah okay, that makes sense. I remember people saying gold from some countries is superior to other ones.
Much of it is personal preference, like those who like Swiss gold over gold produced in Turkey. In the end, gold is gold!
I had a young engineer who was Sri Lankan and used to bring us back gold jewellery as it was good quality, but it is all gold at the end of the day lol.
In India they always use 24 carat gold in the jewelry, none of the low quality stuff!
There you go then. Sri Lanka must have been the same
A true classic! 🪙

Come get MOONed!
Flying down to Mexico for Día de los Muertos is an item on my Bucket list.
And while there I could do a bit of shopping.
One day.
