The Paradox of Possessions: Why More Stuff Doesn't Always Mean More Joy.

Can buying unnecessary things make you happy? It's complicated. Why I say it's complicated is because some people define it as attractive, and they do not find it as a big deal because they feel they have money to spend and no one can question them or how they spend it. Also, to me, it feels like they are the ones who have moved for the money they have, and they can also spend it any way they want because they have suffered and the word for the money either in any hard or whatever ways it may be.

Let's talk about that shiny new gadget we buy, the clothes that have been trending that we really want to buy, the spontaneous trips we want to go on that will cost us too much, or things that might be regarded as non-essential. Although the solution isn't clear-cut, let's explore the ups and downs of discretionary spending, both financially and emotionally. What do we stand to gain afterward?

Sometimes I feel we, as humans, sometimes tend to get or feel good about something, which I term them to be for some time and won't last for long. These are the times that make us feel good about what we spend on. Some of the factors that make this happen are:

  • Instant gratification: how do you feel when you buy something new? When you buy something, you find out that you are very emotional and happy about what you bought, and this will also trigger you to want to do more because the feeling you get from this is just temporary and won't last long. That means that for that time you have been able to satisfy yourself for instant gratification, and once you have been able to satisfy yourself for that time, you feel relieved and want to move on to the next, but this has already cost you some money.

  • Experiences and self-expression: sometimes we just want to travel and get to do things we love more, like our hobbies, or we want to create memories that will never leave our heads. These things will cost us money to do, which I am not against, but we just have to make everything in order so that it won't affect our finances in return.

Spending unnecessarily makes us miss some kind of opportunity that we do not plan for from the beginning because we will not be able to see opportunity in everything happening, and this will make us miss small opportunities because we are not prepared for them. Sometimes we just need to go off and not buy some things so that our finances will remain balanced and in good shape.

Having too many debts to pay is one of the things that easily destroys a man's financial life. One way I feel this can be corrected is by investing in yourself instead of investing in things that are not worth it or investing in liabilities. Also, have a budget plan and have your priorities before you go for anything. Some things might just be, or might not be, a priority, but when we set our priorities for things, we will be mindful of whatever we spend on them.

You own your money and can only decide on whatever you want to spend it on. But in-between, we should also be able to make noise decisions and spend wisely because when things go wrong, no one will be there to stand in for you but just yourself alone. Happy weekend.
