Surviving the Soaring Prices: Coping with Nigeria's Deepening Economic Crisis.
The economic crisis in this country is getting worse day by day, and it is not becoming bearable for the masses to cope with. I was actually thinking that things would become easier compared to what they were before, but I am very disappointed that things are getting worse even more. Sometimes last week I was checking through the rate at which one can trade a dollar for naira, and I was saying that it had gotten to about 1,600 naira, and I was very amazed, but as of yesterday, the price was at 1,800 naira, but when I checked this morning, it went back to 1,700 naira and more.
I knew this was going to make things costly, and it will be so hard for those that earn very little to cope with this. From the way I see this, I think those that are not financially buoyant would not be able to cope with the economic crisis going on presently because even the price of commodities alone is enough to weigh you down, just like a day to me today, and what happened today?
Today, I decided to go get some foodstuffs at the market to stock my house so that I would have something to eat. But I had planned that the price of each commodity would have increased, so I was expecting to get high prices for things. When I went to the market, I went to the store where they sell onions and yam, and I asked for the price, but fortunately, you know, I bought 40 pieces of onions for 1,200 naira then, but after the inflation, it went to 2500 naira. But getting to the market today, I noticed the price came down a bit to 1,500 Naira, which is 300 Naira different from the price it was before the inflation.
I was a bit happy to hear that, and I asked for the price of yam. And for the price of yam, it has really increased so much that I could not buy it because of the price. 6 yams before we sold for 6,000 naira and 6,500 Naira there are about, but now the current price of 6 yams is 10,000 naira I stood in awe of how the difference has really been. What is this country turning into was the question I kept asking myself within my mind.
So I had to leave and go to the place where I bought some other things, which I can still feed on. Though their prices were still on the high side, it was still better than not having anything to eat. So I finally decided to buy rice, beans, cassava flakes, groundnut oil and palm oil, and I ended up spending 20,000 naira for just the little things I bought. I just went back home from there because I was so bothered by the fast increase in the prices of different things. What is the current economic situation in your place, and how are you tackling it??
