El 29 de abril se festejaba mi cumpleaños número 23 y de verdad que inició muy temprano en la mañana! Cerca de las 4 de la mañana, muy temprano, comencé a prepararme para mí día, a pesar de ser cotidiano en sus comienzos, se transformaría en excepcional para mí. Temprano tenía que ir a la universidad y cumplir con mis compromisos como estudiante del segundo semestre de administración de empresas.

April 29th was my 23rd birthday and it really started early in the morning! Around 4:00 a.m., very early in the morning, I started to get ready for my day, even though it was an ordinary day at the beginning, it would become exceptional for me. Early I had to go to the university and fulfill my commitments as a second semester student of business administration.

Me entretuve un poco en la mañana arreglándome con calma, ya que en momentos especiales a mí me gusta tener calma y disfrutar del proceso que conlleva arreglarme. Me relajé tanto que, cuando me di cuenta, faltaban 10 minutos para las 5 de la mañana y, a pesar de que ya me había bañado y vestido, aún no me había maquillado ni peinado. Es importante que todos los días que tengo clase a las 7 de la mañana debo estar en el terminal a las 5:00 para asegurar mi puesto e irme sentada a Maturín, una ciudad que queda a más o menos una hora en bus.

I spent some time in the morning calmly getting ready, because in special moments I like to be calm and enjoy the process of getting ready. I relaxed so much that when I realized it was 10 minutes before 5 a.m. and, although I had already showered and dressed, I still hadn't done my hair and makeup. It is important that every day that I have class at 7:00 a.m. I have to be at the terminal at 5:00 a.m. to secure my seat and go to Maturin, a city that is about an hour away by bus.

En el trayecto del autobús, usualmente solemos dormir un poco, pero como necesitaba arreglarme, me mantuve despierta. El movimiento del bus hacía que mi concentración estuviese centrada en terminar de maquillarme y arreglar mi cabello durante el viaje y el tiempo pasó rápido, mientras la mayoría dormía o descansaba. Al llegar a la universidad veinte minutos antes de que comenzara la clase, subí a tomar asiento para asegurar mi puesto y terminé de arreglar los detalles que me faltaban para estar presentable en mi día de cumpleaños y para las posibles fotos y felicitaciones de mis compañeros.

On the bus ride, we usually sleep a little, but since I needed to get ready, I stayed awake. The movement of the bus meant that my concentration was focused on finishing my makeup and fixing my hair during the ride and the time passed quickly, while most were sleeping or resting. Arriving at the university twenty minutes before class started, I went upstairs to take my seat to secure my seat and finished arranging the details I needed to be presentable on my birthday and for the possible photos and congratulations from my classmates.

Mis clases universitarias estuvieron bastante intensas debido a que tenía una clase tras otra, sin ningún descanso, y desde las 7 hasta la 1 de la tarde es un tiempo bastante largo, tanto así que tuve que desayunar en una de las clases mientras el profesor hablaba. En mi última clase, mi profesora, que tiene una vibra súper cálida y familiar y que nos incentiva a ser compañeros, se dio cuenta de que estaba cumpliendo años porque, cuando iba subiendo las escaleras al último piso en donde tenemos clases, mis compañeros cercanos me recibieron cantando mi cumpleaños desde las escaleras y ella se dio cuenta evidentemente. Es por eso que al finalizar la clase dijo: "Vamos a cantarle rapidito cumpleaños a nuestra compañera Thalía que hoy está cumpliendo años". Todos los que estaban en ese momento en el salón cantaron cumpleaños y yo también, muy emocionada porque sentía cómo la mayoría estaban enfocados en celebrar sinceramente conmigo.

My university classes were quite intense because I had one class after another, without any break, and from 7 am to 1 pm is quite a long time, so much so that I had to eat breakfast in one of the classes while the professor was talking. In my last class, my teacher, who has a super warm and familiar vibe and encourages us to be partners, noticed that I was having a birthday because, when I was going up the stairs to the top floor where we have classes, my close classmates greeted me singing my birthday from the stairs and she noticed evidently. That's why at the end of the class she said: "Let's go sing a quick birthday to our classmate Thalia who is having her birthday today". Everyone in the room at that moment sang birthday and so did I, very excited because I felt how most of them were focused on sincerely celebrating with me.

Al salir de clase, mi novio, a quien no había visto en toda la mañana, me estaba esperando para tener un pequeño compartir antes de él enfrentarse a un examen de producción animal. Los chicos habían comprado algunas chucherías para picar y un refresco para compartir. Yo en este momento estaba bastante llena porque desayuné muy tarde, pero a pesar de todo, compartí con ellos, recibí mis felicitaciones y también piqué un poco.

When I got out of class, my boyfriend, whom I hadn't seen all morning, was waiting for me to have a little share before he faced an animal production exam. The guys had bought some snacks and a soft drink to share. I was pretty full at this point because I had a late breakfast, but nevertheless, I shared with them, received my congratulations and also had some snacks.

Cuando mi novio terminó su examen le pregunté cómo le fue. Él me habló un poco acerca de qué trataba su evaluación y de que no estaba complicada, pero que tenía algunas preguntas con la intención de confundirlos, a ver si ellos realmente estaban preparados sobre el tema. Mi novio me preguntó si quería ir a comer chicha, pero yo le dije que la verdad no quería chicha, pero que sí se me antojaba un heladito. Mi novio, ni corto ni perezoso, de una vez le dijo a un amigo que andaba con él para ver si él también quería acompañarnos, entonces nos fuimos los tres al centro de la ciudad en donde queda una heladería llamada Laya. La verdad, ellos tienen varias sedes, pero nos fuimos a la que queda en el centro y para comer heladito.

When my boyfriend finished his exam I asked him how it went. He told me a little bit about what his evaluation was about and that it was not complicated, but that he had some questions intended to confuse them, to see if they were really prepared on the subject. My boyfriend asked me if I wanted to go eat chicha, but I told him that I didn't really want chicha, but that I did want an ice cream. My boyfriend, neither short nor lazy, at once told a friend who was with him to see if he also wanted to join us, so the three of us went to the center of the city where there is an ice cream shop called Laya. The truth is that they have several locations, but we went to the one in the center to eat ice cream.

A mí sinceramente me gusta mucho más el helado de máquina; este es mi preferido desde que soy pequeña, especialmente el sabor del mantecado, pero las últimas veces que he comido barquilla soft en Laya me han decepcionado, no en cuanto a sabor, pero sí en cuanto a la calidad del producto final. Las barquillas son súper irregulares; unas traen menos helado, en algunas ocasiones incluso no le colocan una especie de pirulín hueco que le colocan, y lo que definitivamente me hizo decidir no comprar más soft hasta que ellos estandaricen este proceso es que aumentaron el precio y siguen sin mejorar la uniformidad final del producto. Sin embargo, he de admitir que el sabor es muy bueno, tanto de la galleta como del helado. Mi novio escogió comprar una tina de $5; esta traía tres tipos de sabores: escogimos pastelado, Nutella y Flips como nuestros sabores. Mientras comíamos helado, conversábamos con nuestro amigo sobre algunos temas profundos, y cuando terminamos y vimos que la hora ya había transcurrido bastante, decidimos irnos porque si no nos iba a tocar agarrar el último bus para ir a casa y entonces este bus es mucho más incómodo porque va demasiado full.

I honestly like the machine ice cream much more; this is my favorite since I was a little girl, especially the buttery flavor, but the last few times I have eaten soft ice cream at Laya I have been disappointed, not in terms of taste, but in terms of the quality of the final product. The barquillas are super irregular; some have less ice cream, sometimes they don't even put a kind of hollow lollipop, and what definitely made me decide not to buy more soft until they standardize this process is that they increased the price and still do not improve the final uniformity of the product. However, I have to admit that the flavor is very good, both the cookie and the ice cream. My boyfriend chose to buy a $5 tub; it came in three types of flavors: we chose Cake, Nutella and Flips as our flavors. While we were eating ice cream, we were talking with our friend about some deep topics, and when we finished and saw that the hour had already passed, we decided to leave because otherwise we would have to take the last bus to go home and then this bus is much more uncomfortable because it is too full.

Cuando llegamos a la casa me esperaban abrazos y felicitaciones de los otros miembros de la familia que aún no me había visto en el día. La primera es saludarme fue mi sobrina Amanda. Mientras estaba ocupada saludando y concentrada en el amor que me estaban dando, mi novio salió de la nada con arreglo de flores grande que mandó a hacer en nuestra ausencia, esto de verdad que me tenía bastante sorprendida porque en ningún momento me lo esperé. Las flores rojas se llaman Bastón de San José o Ginger rojo y las moraditas eran orquídeas barco.

When we arrived at the house, hugs and congratulations were waiting for me from the other members of the family who had not seen me earlier in the day. The first to greet me was my niece Amanda. While I was busy greeting and concentrating on the love they were giving me, my boyfriend came out of nowhere with a large arrangement of flowers that he had made in our absence, this really had me quite surprised because I never expected it. The red flowers were called St. Joseph's cane or red ginger and the purple ones were boat orchids.

Estas flores en donde vivo originalmente, es decir en el estado zulia, nunca las había visto pero aquí en el Oriente del país he visto frecuente estas flores y que las utilizan mucho para los arreglos florales. Este fue un regalo hermoso e inesperado y el cual me llenó de mucha alegría y gratitud. No pude resistirme a tomarle fotos para presumir de mi hermoso regalo.

I had never seen these flowers where I originally live, that is, in the state of Zulia, but here in the East of the country I have seen these flowers frequently and they are used a lot for floral arrangements. This was a beautiful and unexpected gift which filled me with joy and gratitude. I could not resist taking pictures to show off my beautiful gift.

Decidí poner mi arreglo de flores en la mesa de la sala para que así todos lo vieran. Y en este momento tan mágico la electricidad se desvaneció de repente. Algo muy venezolano que nos sucedió en ese momento, o por lo menos muy venezolano en los últimos años, nosotros que veníamos tan cansados y con la intención de acostarnos en el aire a descansar un poco nos miramos con un poco de desilusión, pero no dejamos que esto nos afectará tanto, fuimos a tomar un baño y luego a acostarnos un ratito en el cuarto que aún se mantenía fresco. Luego de descansar un ratito me fui a comenzar a arreglar para mis fotos en la noche y por qué mi novio me había dicho que íbamos a salir a dar una vuelta para cenar y a cantar cumpleaños al volver.

I decided to put my flower arrangement on the living room table so everyone could see it. And in this magical moment the electricity suddenly vanished. Something very Venezuelan that happened to us at that moment, or at least very Venezuelan in recent years, we who were so tired and with the intention of lying in the air to rest a little we looked a little disappointed, but we did not let this affect us so much, we went to take a bath and then to lie down for a while in the room that was still cool. After resting for a little while I went to start getting ready for my pictures for the night and why my boyfriend had told me that we were going out for dinner and a birthday song when we got back.

Cuando salimos a cenar no había luz y a mitad de camino llegó la luz, sorprendentemente y gracias a Dios. El lugar al que íbamos, el cual nos parece la mejor opción del pueblito para comer, por alguna razón no trabajo ese día y nos devolvimos a casa con la intención de preparar algo sencillo para comer y luego cantar el cumpleaños.

When we left for dinner there was no light and half way there was light, surprisingly and thank God. The place we were going to, which seems to us the best option in town to eat, for some reason was not working that day and we returned home with the intention of preparing something simple to eat and then sing the birthday.

Mi torta era completamente de chocolate, con una cubierta de chocolate y unas oreos riquísimas que la adornaban, estas realzaron mucho el sabor del chocolate y quedaba como anillo al dedo. Repartí torta para quienes querían comer un poco y el resto la guardé para el día siguiente. Ya eran las 10 de la noche y yo estaba súper agotada, pero no quería irme a dormir sin aún haber aprovechado mi maquillaje para tomarme algunas fotos de este día tan maravilloso. 23 solo se cumple una vez en la vida y yo los disfruté como tal. Fue un feliz cumpleaños 🎂

My cake was completely chocolate, with a chocolate frosting and some delicious oreos that adorned it, these really enhanced the chocolate flavor and it was like a ring to the finger. I gave out cake for those who wanted to eat some and the rest I saved for the next day. It was already 10 pm and I was super exhausted, but I didn't want to go to sleep without still having taken advantage of my makeup to take some pictures of this wonderful day. 23 only comes around once in a lifetime and I enjoyed it as such. It was a happy birthday 🎂
