The best life advice I have ever received from a strong woman who still inspires me to strive and work hard to be a good and fair person is from my maternal grandmother.
I lived with her throughout my childhood. She was not only family, but also a role model and my teacher. She was the one who accompanied me in the afternoons to do my homework and schoolwork, who marveled at the miniature crafts I made with my little hands, who, when neighbors and friends visited in the afternoon, she would call me to bring her my literature and dictation notebook to show it off to everyone, because she was proud of my cursive handwriting and my skill at making scale accessories for my dolls.
My grandmother was a very serious woman with a strong character. I don't think there are people like that anymore. She was very serious and rarely smiled, but she was always good to me, and I only have fond memories of her.
From her, I received the best tool for life so far, and that is the advice to cultivate the virtue of discretion: One day she told me, “You have eyes and ears, not a mouth.”
That phrase meant that I should be discreet about the events around me, not gossip, and respect other people's conversations and affairs.
She also repeated to me often, and by her example, that I should be patient. She taught me and explained that reacting impulsively was not right, that I should think carefully about my words and actions, and that I should take nothing for granted.
Thanks to that, and since always, it has brought me many blessings, such as the trust of my friends and classmates and coworkers. I am a person who will hardly judge you, who knows how to listen, and who knows how to remain calm when everyone around me has something to say or is getting carried away by the crowd.
My grandmother gave me the great advice to have my own judgment and to know how to identify the enormous value and weight of words.
El mejor consejo de vida que he recibido de una mujer fuerte que hasta el día de hoy me inspira a esforzarme y ocuparme en ser una buena y justa persona es mi abuela materna.
Conviví con ella durante toda mi infancia, no solo fue familia sino tambien un modelo a seguir y mi maestra. Era quien me acompañaba en las tardes a hacer mis tareas y trabajos del colegio, quien se asombraba con las manualidades miniatura que hacía con mis pequeñas manos, quien cuando había visitas por la tarde de vecinos y amigos, me llamaba para llevarle mi cuaderno de literatura y dictado para mostrárselo con orgullo a los demas, porque ella estaba orgullosa de mi letra cursiva y de mi destreza para hacer accesorios a escala para mis muñecas.
Mi abuela fue una mujer muy seria de carácter fuerte, creo que hoy ya no existen personas así, era muy seria y rara vez sonreía pero siempre fue buena conmigo y de ella solo tengo buenos recuerdos.
De ella, recibí la mejor herramienta de vida hasta ahora, y es el consejo de cultivar la virtud de la discreción: Un día ella me dijo "usted tiene ojos y oídos, no boca".
Esa frase quiere decir que yo debía ser discreta con los sucesos a mi alrededor, a no ser chismosa, a respetar las conversaciones y asuntos ajenos.
También me repetía mucho y con su ejemplo que debía ser paciente, me enseñó y explicó que reaccionar impulsivamente no estaba bien, que debía pensar bien mis palabras y acciones y que no diera nada por sentado.
Gracias a eso y desde siempre eso me ha traído muchas bendiciones, como la confianza de mis amigos y compañeros de estudio y de trabajo. Soy una persona que difícilmente te juzgará, que sabe escuchar, y que sabe estar tranquila cuando alrededor todos tienen algo que decir o estan dejándose llevar por la corriente.
Mi abuelita me regalo el gran consejo de tener criterio propio y a saber identificar el enorme valor y peso de la palabra.

Today, I always see her in the flowers because she loved her garden when it was full of flowers, especially ixoras. I miss my grandmother very much every day. She passed away almost 20 years ago, and as time goes by, I find myself thinking “I wish you were here” more and more often, because there are so many things I want to ask her. I would like to hear her opinion on so many things and her reaction to everything that is happening in the world. Her personality inspired stability and strength, and I would like to be like her, even if only a little.
Hoy la veo siempre en las flores porque ella amaba su jardín cuando se llenaba de flores, especialmente las ixoras. Extraño mucho a mi abuelita todos los días, ella fallecio hace casi 20 años, y a medida que pasa el tiempo son mas recurrentes las ocasiones donde pienso "ojala estuvieras aquí", porque hay muchas cosas que quiero preguntarle, quisiera oír que opina de tantas cosas y su reacción ante todo lo que esta pasando en el mundo. Su forma de ser te inspiraba estabilidad y fortaleza, y yo quisiera parecerme a ella aunque fuera un poco.

You are very lucky to have your grandmother with you when you were young. It is always the grand mother that loves us more than our parents.
So sorry she's late but her lessons are living on through you, I like that advice about having eyes and ears, not mouth. It's an interesting advice and very true.
