Beautiful Things; Often Afraid To Lose

More often than not, we are always afraid to lose the things we most love and care about. We might have just come out from a dark place and are still finding our footing, and then beautiful things starts happening to us. All of a sudden, we fear losing these beautiful things and the thought of slipping back into that dark place is hard to bear. So, in all we do, we beg and plead with God, the Universe or whoever we think is listening and has control not to take the beautiful things we already have. That is what Beautiful Things by Benson Boone’ is all about.

This song is more than just a classic love song about love, it also encapsulates the thought process and fears that comes with loving somebody. In the song, Benson tells us about how much better his life is after being in a rough patch for some years. He’s grateful that he can visit his family every month and that he has a girl he loves whom his family approves of. I think we can all relate to this. Things looking up after going through a depressing time. Good things happening and we tend to be grateful for these good things.

Though, there's always a ’but’ most times. That fear of losing these good things. Sometimes the fear of the future causes us to miss the joy of the present. We are so cynical about the future that we cannot just live in the moment without the fear that anything beautiful is eventually going to be stripped away from us. So, while singing about the good things, Benson also establishes the fear he feels of losing everything he loves and the comfort of his current relationship. So, he begs for everything to stay as it is.

In the second verse, Benson knows he has all these beautiful things. He has his family, the girl he loves, peace and love, but he can't stop fixating on the potential of him losing these things, even though he's living a good life at the moment. We can hear the desperation in his voice as the tempo stays upbeat. We can feel the ’what ifs?. I know of countless times when good things happen to me and my next thought is, ”this is too good to be true. What's going to happen next?” Yes, it's okay to fear loss but not at the risk of that fear overshadowing the joy or happiness we are supposed to feel. It's also worthy to note that if we lose things, maybe they are paving a way for better things to come.

Beautiful Things is a message after everyone's heart_the human cry for beautiful things to happen to us and remain as they are_even though they can be taken away at any moment. This emotional song explores love, fear and gratitude still for the lovely things we are experiencing in our lives. The lyrics, rhythm and the musical instruments all serves to match with the emotions of Benson. The song is raw, it's touching, it's heart wrenching. The song is something you can yell at the top of your lungs in hopes that someone out there is listening to your pleas. The song is real and will always remain a top favorite on my playlist.
