Digging the blues on a Stormy Monday
Hello music lovers and Hello hivers!
It's Tuesday again people and you know what that means – time to share some tunes for the brilliant #threetunetuesday initiative started by @ablaze!
This week we are playing three tunes that are appropriately named as we had Storm Floris yesterday (monday) in Scotland.
Stormy Monday is in the title of all the songs today
It is Tuesday and that of course means that it's #ttt or #threetunetuesday and so it's time to share some tunes with you!
@ablaze started #ttt 219 weeks ago! Go check out what it is all about on his last post Nirvana II for Three Tune Tuesday - Week 219 - win 6 HBI
Do go support @ablaze as without him we would not have this mental fun musical activity that you can win HSBI from! I am happy to be one of the SIX sponsors and it is kinda fun checking out music from all over this global village of ours!
Long live #ttt 😁🎼 and #threetunetuesday
Where to start!
My inspiration as I mentioned earlier Storm Floris hit us yesterday in Scotland.
It even forced the cancellation of the military tattoo at Edinburgh Castle, I think only the second time in 75 years or something.
So yes it was a stormy Monday yesterday!
Today's "Three Tunes Tuesday" is dedicated to Storm Floris that caused some serious havoc with high winds, making me think of a song title that perfectly captures the mood...
Stormy Monday
It's a classic blues thtune and there are some incredible versions of it out there. So, let's dive into three great tunes that share this powerful name.
So, for this week’s #ThreetuneTuesday we have three tunes with Stormy Monday in the title.
First up, we have the legendary "Genius of Soul" Ray Charles.
Tune 1 ~ Ray Charles - Stormy Monday (Live in 1980)
I choose this version as it sums up just how cool he is...
Actually stops playing the piano at chats to someone on and off around the 1 minute mark lol!
I am sure you have all heard of Ray Charles, a pioneer who fused rhythm and blues, gospel, and jazz. This is one artist who should listen to @deraaa.
He was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter who began his career in the 1940s and formed his own band called The Ray Charles Orchestra.
This rendition for me is Ray Charles up at his best. His vocals and piano playing steal the song!
Now let's go back 80 years or so to 1947 and listen to the original artist who recorded it....
Tune 2 ~ T-Bone Walker - Call It Stormy Monday
The original "Stormy Monday Blues" was written and performed by T-Bone Walker, a blues legend from Texas.
Born in 1910, he was a massive influence on other blues artists like B.B. King and Chuck Berry.
I must admit I have know a few people over the years, mainly Americans, who were called T-Bone, so I wonder if T-Bone Walker made it popular?
I never knew this, but Walker is widely credited with pioneering the use of the electric guitar as a lead instrument in blues music.
He recorded it in 1947 and I must admit I love his laid back vocals. Very me if I sang the blues!
Tune 3 ~ The Allman Brothers Band - Stormy Monday
For our final version, we turn to the Southern rock legends, The Allman Brothers Band.
This is more my neck of the woods when I am back in the States. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 the original lineup consisted of brothers Duane (guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, organ), along with Dickey Betts (guitar), Berry Oakley (bass), and drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson.
Their rendition of "Stormy Monday" is less bluesy than the first two and much more of a blues-rock epic! It is from their iconic album At Fillmore East.
They turn the blues tune into a right old fluffing jam with mental guitar solos.
I have these guys on my to listen to list for tomorrow!
So there you have it – three tunes all with Stormy Monday in the title.
Which was your favourite Stormy Monday tune or is it one of the many others that could have been chosen? Or have you never heard of these artists?!?

Really? It would be so you if you sang blues! Do you have a voice like T Bone? I liked The Allman Brothers Band's version better. If that song came on and you were at the bar, I'd buy you a drink. Hahaha. It's raining here too. Big hug to you, Ed.
Hehe well I am singing the blues tonight hehe the Rangers blues!
He has such a cool voice I think. Hehe yes I thought you would prefer the more rock type version. I love that hug so thank you Nancy :)
Three of the best singing Stormy Monday. I grew up listening to T-Bone. Thanks so much for sharing this unique song in the history of Blues. Take care.

Did you really? I think he is great. I love his voice and learnt so much researching this song.
He's a Texas native. My mom loved blues and would play it all day, together with Muddy Waters and others.
Yes I saw he was from Texas, oh I do like Muddy Waters too.
I used to have an old jazz CD called stormy weather. It was a various artist compilation and it was awesome. Great tunes this week!
Oh I bet that was a great CD. I find it all relaxing and chilled. A change for sure :)

That first number was definitely something I’d listen to. I like the way he says “Goddam it…” 🤣 with so much energy 😂
Oh I think I’m in love with Stormy Mondays. I loved that intro and yes, his voice is definitely charming. That’s a beautiful number he did there. And so simple.
Okay. I take it back. I prefer the Allyman Brothers and their version of Stormy Mondays. That’s a nice guitar lead and wooooo, got my ears singing “Hallelujah!”
Hehe I am chuffed you listened to them all. Ah so the Brothers won in the end eh. I thought I would do somethign different!
